A poster pm'ed me and asked me to start this thread in the Bible Version forum:
Can you start a topic on John R. Rice's Study Bible?
How good is this study Bible?
Is it any better than the Scofield Bible?
How come many fundamentalist Baptist don't use this study Bible?
Does it have legalistic standards on it's notes?
Is it worth buying this study Bible?

I hope you guys can give me more information about this study Bible. Thanks!!

I too will have to look. I don't remember where I saw the copy I saw. Believe it was someone at church that had it. I'll ask me wife. ;)

I had one and read it . It was ok.For my money the King James Study Bible is the best out today. I used to use the New Scofield Study Bible for over 20 years. You could do much worse than a J.R. Rice study Bible but I think you could do better.

I have The Rice Reference Bible. I do not know if it is the same as the Bible in question. Mine has a forward by Dr. Jerry Falwell, and a chapter entitled, What Must I Do To Be Saved? by Dr. Rice.

I've had this Bible for over 20 years. It is one that I reference frequently.

You are right on the name, PB. Wondering how it would compare with the teaching notes in MacArthur Study Bible, Ryrie, Scofield, etc

I love mine. I have been using it over 20 years now and it is fairly worn. I don't preach from it very often anymore but I keep it here in my office for study.

I find that I am in agreement with Rice much more often than Scofield. With any study Bible you must remember the difference between the scripture and the commentary. I find that I disagree with Scofield on a regular basis. I am sure I disagree with some of Rice's commentary as well, but I can not think of an example right off.

There is a lot missing in the Rice Study Bible. The commentary is nowhere near as complete as say, the King James Study Bible or the Ryrie, you basically get John R. Rice's thoughts on different passages as you go through the Bible, almost at random. I really enjoy mine but if you want to do deep study on a passage you are going to need more.
