He was a dispensational hole.
Believers were were only called Christians after the resurrection.
The question should probably be:
Was John the Baptist a believer in the Messiah? (yes)
Or
Was he a disciple of the Messiah? (no)
Both John and Jesus preached the same message of repentance (turning to God away from sin) (Matthew 4).
