Juneteenth

I had never heard of it.

 

I am so, kinda....My parents were both born & bred in Texas and I was in Houston from age 4 to age 11 and Virginia from 11 to 15. Somehow, my sister, the middle child, is a Southerner, but my brother and I are not.

 

Daisy, my goodness! I lived in Houston for many years, and Juneteenth was always a major thing there. Guess you were too young to notice.

 

Juneteenth is actually only a big deal in Texas - the slaves were not told until June 19th that they had been freed - It was called Juneteenth and the start of the celebration

 

Juneteenth is a big deal in Texas, but it is also a big deal in other parts of the South. I know several cities and towns that have large African-American populations in other states that have Juneteenth celebrations. I guess it started there and the celebration spread.:thumbs:

 

Possibly, but I don't think it was a big deal in the early 60s. We lived in the suburbs; perhaps it was just not recognised there, then.

According to Juneteenth.com, it started up again in 1968 - I was gone by then. It became official in 1980 - I was long gone by then.

I've emailed my older siblings to see if they have any recollection of it.

 

I don't remember hearing of Juneteenth when I was in school.

My brother & sister got back to me. My brother went to high school first year in Texas and my sister was in Jr. High - neither of them had heard of it, so it's not just me having been too young then.

 

Well Daisy, we may have been neighbors. In the early 1960s, I lived in Sharpstown, back when that was the up and coming part of town. Still remember the Southwest Freeway opening up. How things have changed!

 

I remember when Sharpstown had one of the first indoor malls - airconditioned! Katie Highway was a long stretch with nothing on either side.

I lived in Denver before Houston - but I sure don't remember much of that.

 

Juneteenth is celebrated in Alabama in predominately African-American communities.

We were almost neighbors. I lived not too far away from Sharpstown during the 1960's, neighbor.:laugh:

 

It has somethingto do with the date President Lincoln freed the slaveand the Emmaniciaption Proclomation.
