Just some musing

Good post. The subjects you mention in the OP is among the reasons I've been for the past year or so considering leaving the baptist faith in favor of reformed or quaker tradition. I haven't made up my mind yet... still in the mulling phase...

 

Interesting, John. You must go to an unusual Baptist church that these things would be some of the reasons you are considering leaving.
I will say that every group has its legalism and rules whether or not they are really legalism.
Many in Reformed circles argue about Christmas, exclusive Psalmody, Sabbath-keeping, and a whole host of other issues. Some in the Quaker tradition who have embraced voluntary poverty have a whole list of taboos involving simple living.
We're all people.

I worry a lot less than you do, I guess. This is a world-wide discussion board.
I believe that you have misread the intent of some of the posts.
For example, Murph had some valid concerns about a teacher potentially using Dante inappropriately to push an agenda.
You seemed to generalize that parents were generally stupid and should NOT be in charge of their childrens' educations.

I read and enjoy Harry Potter. But I do not think it is wrong for someone else to "judge" that is wrong. "Judge not" is often overemphasized at the expense of the same Bible saying "Judge with righteous judgment". No judgment means that all truth is relative. Our friends concerned about Harry Potter are expressing honest convictions. I am not bound to follow their convictions. I would join them, though, with many of the Harry Potter knockoffs, including Phillip Pullman. But other people are not bound by my convictions. But that also does not mean that I cannot express that some things are right and some things are wrong.

Ahhh this place is always insightful. I have learned all kinds of things from this site and other Christian boards. Too many to list...lol
I've even wondered several times if I was really a Baptist after reading different threads here...and wondered if I really want to stay a Baptist.
Oh well what can you do? Everyone is so different.

 

TS, this place is just like any other there are a lot of good folks. But there are also a few odd ones. Even if 99% are the good ones, it is the 1% that seem to get the attention.

I would say enjoy the fellowship and edification that it can bring at times and overlook the other stuff or you will spend a lot of time frustrated around these parts.

 

Actually, my own church is quite mainline and appropriate to be called Baptist. Some here will think they're liberal, but they will also think that Ronald Reagan is liberal.

I must honestly say that it's because of the bb that I've considered leaving the Baptist fellowship. I have a difficult time believing that the views of some are that commonplace in Baptist circles.

Oh, absolutely true.

I'd be looking at the RCA. There are a few good RCA churches in my area.

I guess being a visitor to a Quaker church in an upscale community means I haven't see this part yet

I have learned that if you have a sense of humor, you might be a liberal.

I have learned that if you do not believe it is wrong for a company to tell it's employees to say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, you are a liberal.

I've learned that if you use any bible version apart from the KJV, you are a neo-fundamentalist, and a liberal.

I've learned that if you question the possible meaning of baptism, you are a questionable Christian, a neo-fundamentalist, and a liberal.

I've learned that if you believe the meaning of wine in the bible is wine, and not juice, you are possibly busting open the gates of hell, you are a very questionable Christian, a neo-fundamentalist, and a liberal.

I've learned that if you vote for anyone but a Republican, you are from the pit of hell, definitely not a Christian, a neo-con, and a liberal.

I've learned that if I don't quit on a post like this at about this point, I'm probably going to get edited. Maybe even by a liberal!
