I keep hearing some say "I am a TRUE Baptist!" What does that mean? Does it mean if someone disagrees with your point of view on certain subjects or interpretation of Scripture, they are a "false Baptist?"

Will "false Baptists" be going to heaven? Will "true Baptists" be going to heaven? If not, why not? Will people of other denominations go to heaven or is it just "true Baptists?"

I'm really curious about this because there seem to be a lot of different view points among Baptists on this Board re: topics such as:

The Rapture
Israel in Future Prophecy
Israel in Present Day
Women Preachers
Music / Hymn Theology
Eternal Security
Great Tribulation
Gifts of the Holy Spirit (i.e., tongues, healing of sick)
End Times / Prophecy

Who decides who is a "true Baptist?"  :(

And what difference does it make?

You know something? I have no idea what a 'true Baptist' is!

But I know I am a born-again child of God the Father through the work of Jesus Christ and by the agency of the Holy Spirit. I know what a true Christian is!

:D

I would guess a "true Baptist" is one who holds to the doctrinal tenets of either their local Baptist church and/or the tenets of one of the Baptist denominational confessions - Southern Baptist BF&M, 1689 London Baptist Confession, Philadelphia Confession, etc.

I know I am one of those 'true' Baptists & I do not take my beliefs lightly. Many here have listed themselves as Baptists, but aren't, & some have been very honest & put something else; still others say they are 'baptistic' in nature or that they once were, but now are something else. Whew! I never realized just how messed-up the world had gotten until I ventured out into it. It's bad; it really is worse than I ever could have imagined!

Baptists have existed since the days of Christ. This gives us a heritage. The church was established by Jesus Himself & this means we tie our beliefs to what Jesus taught. We are to stand for the truth and have a set standard of beliefs and doctrines. (Doctrinal beliefs ARE important). Only scriptural churches will stand for scriptural doctrines.

I know there are other folks of like-mind & faith who do not wear the name Baptist, but who hold to Baptist doctrine. I don't claim to be completely knowledgable in any of this & I probably should have done a search first on "true baptist" before I posted anything. I have to read hard, study long, & write down everything, because my brain ain't as sharp as it once was; yet I do know that false religions are jealous of true worship & those who try to worship God in spirit & truth are beat upon terribly :)

Sorry Granny, but Baptists didn't start till the 1600's. You sound just like a Church of Christ or Catholic. Why is it people are so cought up in denominations? Doctrine is the key not denomination. There are a lot of non-baptist out there who have the same doctrine as baptists.

Here is a good series on church history that might help open some eyes.

Sorry Grasshopper, but true Baptists have been folllowing the teachings of the founder of the first church since the day he estasblished it.

Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

They may not have been called Baptist, but the doctine has been the same, with the same source; the Holy Spirit and Word of God. .

My belief of the Rapture is that it WILL occur. I believe everything about Israel in the Bible and I accept Women preachers (my church pastor is one.) All others I have not opinion on as of 06/30/02

I've noticed the diffrences we seem to have on beliefs/doctrine here lately. hmmmm...True Baptist? I think a true Baptist is a Christian who bases beliefs on the Bible and what it has to say. If you don't have the same opinions {about somethings} that dosn't mean you aren't saved! Now of course to be saved you must belive the gospel, that sort of thing.
There is a list above of things people have disagreed with. I will retype it add put my opinions. Tell me if I am "true Baptist" or not. [IMG]

Rapture: yeap. I'm a goin, too! the Bible says He will come as a thief in the night. May not use exact word as rapture, but it WILL take place.

Isreal in future: Dosent the Bible say all nations would eventualy turn against Isreal?

Isreal in present: I'm not to sure what all is going on, but we had better stick with Isreal. They are God's chossen earthly people, and without Isreal, we wouldn't have a Saviour.

Women preachers: NO WAY! The Bible says women are to be mans helpmate, and that they aren't to have athourity over men.

Music and Hymn theology: Abstain from the world. Certian types of music are worldly and even ungodly. Stick with the Hymns.

Eternal Security: I'd sure hate not to know! I'm 100% of my home after death. You can find the answer to that in john 3:16 "should not perish but have EVERLASTING life." {see also john 14}

Tribulation: yeap. The Bible speaks of seven years of tribulation. BTW if you aren't ready, get your eternity settled before it's too late.
Also, I believe it will be AFTER the rapture.

Gifts of the Spirit: I do not believe that tounges{gibberjabber stuff} is right. Healing the sick? uh uh! God is the great physician! {No way do I agree with the Benny Hinn stuff. :rolleyes: :eek: }

End of times: after the rapture, 7yrs trib., milinial rein, white throne judgement, God is bringing New Jerusilum {Heaven} to the earth. and if I'm not mistaken, the old earth is going to be burnt before heaven is brought down? [IMG]

These are my opinions. I base them on the Bible. You may not agree, and I can't help that, but I am not changing!

So are Baptist the only ones who followed these teachings? Do you say "baptist" is a doctrine and not a denomination? Again this sounds like the Catholic church. Only WE are true followers of scripture.

What is all this concern about True Baptist... Never heard the term myself... True doctrine that is another topic entirely... Find the one that has the true doctrine and you will find the true baptist... Do you believe one exists?... I'm not saved because I belong to a certain denomination or believe a certain doctrine but by the shed blood of the Lamb Of God!... That brothers and sisters is the only thing that will get any of us to Heaven... btw God will never lose one and save ALL his children!... Brother Glen [IMG]

Rapture: Yep. After the golden age of the church.

Israel in future: Many, if not all, Jews will become Christians in the golden age of the church.

Israel in present: They are our only democratic ally in the Mideast. We should support them as our ally in the war on terror.

Women preachers: Nope.

Music and Hymn theology: I prefer the hymns and Psalms and theologically-correct modern Christian songs.

Eternal Security: Christ will never lose one of His sheep given to Him by the Father before this world began.

Tribulation: Christians have always and will always suffer persecution until the golden age of the church and then for a brief time just before Christ returns at the end of time.

Gifts of the Spirit: I believe the miraculous gifts have ceased. The ordinary gifts the Spirit still gives out to build up the church.

End of times: Postmillennialist like many, if not most, Southern Baptists of the 1800s.

These are my beliefs based on what I read in the Bible as a whole. I have changed my beliefs in the past(I was born and raised in the Church of Christ and was very hardline) and will again if necessary to follow my Lord more completely.

One redeemed by Christ's blood,

Ken

You know you are a Baptist if you start each public prayer with "Lord we thank you for this day...".

Any other "dead give-aways"?

Actually there are 7 or 8 Baptist Distinctives to which most Baptists adhere.

Here is the General Association of Regular Baptists (GARBC) version:

http://www.garbc.org/garbc_home/baptdist.shtml

Also, you know you are a "true" Baptist if you know what AWANA stands for.

AWANA IS CHANGING AGAIN—Awana recently sent a letter from its president to churches who currently use Awana. The biggest changes are in the doctrinal statement where it has reverted back to its weaker original statement and dropped the stronger recent one. It claims it is going back to its roots, but this is really a step toward further compromise. A Kansas pastor wrote the following, in a recent long discourse with an Awana official: “….I will not argue with you about Awana's glorious history and how God has used it….My problem is with the deceit of chartering American Baptist Churches despite the clear statements prohibiting it, and now the removing of key parts of the doctrinal statement that clearly speak against false doctrine and trends such as the charismatic movement, and the policy change. Its statement formerly said churches who used Awana were not to be 'affiliated with' the NCC/WCC at all. Then they weakened it to 'not be supportive of.'” Now this more recent change is to drop the policy on this completely, and opens the door for charismatic/Pentecostal and liberal churches. The Awana official, in an e-mail to the Kansas pastor, noted specifically that the Assemblies of God and all American Baptist Churches now would be free to use Awana. The Kansas pastor adds: “In this latest change, Awana has dropped its policy of selecting churches completely. All you have to do now is say you agree to teach the materials as they are given.” He said Awana's philosophy, and that of many other organizations and churches that formerly stood for the truth, is to downplay doctrine so that more people can be reached for the gospel. The Bible clearly condemns that philosophy <“end justifies the means”>. In recent years both the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship and the American Council of Christian Churches have had strong resolutions warning of Awana's compromise.

The above article was in the May 15,2001 issue of the Calvary Contender, but there are others.
