Key board drivers ?

    Does anyone know why the drivers for my key board just disapeard. I had to unplug it in order to reroute the wire for it but when I plugged it back in it wouldn't work. The computer wasn't on at the time the mouse still works so I checked it out in the device manager and there is no hardware listed nor is there any drivers.

    Are you sure you have the keyboard plugged in correctly, fully. If power was off, I'd guess drivers are okay if they are even needed.

    You might try another keyboard as well.

    MB, if you are using Windows, I think it doesn't even need specific drivers unless you have a keyboard with special keys that come with its own. Even then, the default should work.

    Is this USB or PS2?

    Hi Everyone;
    I'm no computer expert by any means. I went to the control panel and clicked on System then clicked on hardware tab then device manager which gives you a list of all the devices on your Computer. Then all you have to do is click on key boards and a panel opens with the name of the Key board device or if it's plug and play it will say standard ms keyboard. Which is why I was surprized to see nothing listed there I clicked on driver and there was nothing there either. The key board still wouldn't work. I turned it off and checked the connection, and as far as I could tell, there wasn't anything wrong with it I started it back up again and the Key board still didn't work. This time I did a system restore and it fixed the problem. It really had me going there for a while. I did a virus scan and it was clean but I still don't know what happened. A glitch I guess.
    To answer Don's post I used my wife's computer to get on the net to try and find answers.

    Maybe go back to Device Manager now and see what it says for comparison's sake.

    Is it a PS/2 or a USB keyboard? PS/2 is not hot swappable; you should always turn your computer off before plugging in or unplugging a PS/2 device.

    I ask because it could be that your motherboard's PS/2 port for the keyboard has died or fried.

    Something similar was ran in May's issue of Maximum PC. A guy wrote in that his MS Internet keyboard has stopped working on his computer (except for the email button), but it worked on every other computer. The computer recognized it on POST, but Windows didn't see it. The Doc gave the following suggestions:
    </font>
    • Make sure the keyboard is plugged in good.</font>
    • Make sure the plug doesn't have any bent pins.</font>
    • Uninstall the drivers and let Windows put drivers with it.</font>
    • Check to see if something else is stomping on the keyboard's IRQ (interrupt request): right-click on My Computer, Properties, Hardware tab, Device Manager, choose "System Resources by Connection" from the View menu.</font>
    • Ignore the problem by using a USB keyboard.</font>
    • Last "free" resort: Reinstall Windows.</font>
    I hope some of that helps.

    I'm pretty sure it wasn't on when I unplugged it. I did have to do a clean install of my software. I figured out why System restore didn't work and that was because I had never used it before and It had no restore point. Seems you have to give it a restore point while it's running right in order for it to work. The system restore I'm sure is why the control panel had everything in it duplicated. Although the hard drive showed no such thing.I keep all my files of importance on a DVD RW that way I don't have to worry about hackers getting my info. Any way it's up and running again and the PS2 slot in just fine. I'm still not sure why it just wouldn't recognize the Keyboard. Maybe it was static electricity. Thanks you guys for your input.
