USA Today newspaper had a "snapshot" cartoon drawing on the front page of yesterday's edition (Wednesday, November 9). It was entitled Tow lengthy codes and it compared the number of pages in the KJV Holy Bible (1472 pages) and the U.S. tax code (20,000 pages).

The tax code is incomprehensible. It is corrupt and the product of special interests and unprincipled politicians who have figured out ways to steal from the U.S. Treasury for their own personal benefits at the expense of ordinary people.

The Wall Street Journal newspaper in an article entitled Taxing Words on November 1 noted that the entire code runs to 9,000,000 words:

The nine-million-word figure is arrived at by combining Title 26 with all the regulations that have been written to implement the law. The regulations are estimated to run to nearly six million words, giving us the oft-quoted nine million total. Last year, the White House noted conservatively that the tax code ran to "over one million words." Mr. Walker arrives at a figure of approximately 1.3 million words if one excludes "all the auxiliary and supplementary material (lists of amendments, cross-references, transitional rules, etc.)," which is close to the White House figure.

It amazes me that the Triune God of the Universe needs only 1,472 pages for a comprehensive manual for every person but Uncle Sam needs 20,000 pages in order to impose an unfair tax code.

With all due respect, the Bible is inadequate as a tax code.

That is not the comparison. The tax code is rotten and needs to be simplified. It should not be 15 times longer than The Holy Bible because all that is corruption and special favors for special interests.

Simple does not mean good or fair, unfortunately.

The United States Code comes in 35 Volumes. It must be totally unfair. If you exclude tables and indicies, it is 27 volumes.

How unfair does that make US law compared to the bible?

Criminal law deals with many issues. The tax code deals with only one issue. For the criminal law to be as corrupt as the tax code, every crime would have to have 20,000 pages, in which case throwing the book at the criminal probably would be a deadly crime.

What has happened in the tax code, which is unable to be read and understood, is that special interests in control of Congress have gotten themselves favors at the expense of the people. As Mark Twain said, we have the best congress that money can buy.

Another term for the tax code might be the accountants and lawyers full-employment act. Accountants who do taxes work sixteen hours a day seven days a week during the first quarter.

You see taxation as one issue. That is obviously an oversimplification on your part.
US Tax Code : Table of Contents

    The major headings are

    Subtitle A - Income Taxes
Subtitle B - Estate and Gift Taxes
    Subtitle C - Employment Taxes
Subtitle D - Miscellaneous Excise Taxes
Subtitle E - Alcohol, Tobacco and Certain Other Excise Taxes
Subtitle F - Procedure and Administration
Subtitle G - The Joint Committe on Taxation
Subtitle H - Financing of Presidential Elections Campaigns
Subtitle I - Trust Fund Code
Subtitle J - Coal Industry Healt Benefits
Subtitle K - Group Health Plan Requirements

For course subtitle A is an enormous part of the code considering all the different types of income that are our there.

Crooked, isn't it? You know that it is crooked when a liberal newspaper like USA Today starts taking shots at it. They tax everything except the air that you breathe. The only thing not taxed in Indiana is prescription medicine and groceries. Everything else has a sales tax or in the case of the telephone and jewelry, luxury tax left over from World War II. Property taxes are sky-high because school districts can spend whatever they like and raise taxes on property to pay for it.

The total tax bill on the middle class is approaching 59%. For the upper middle class the tax code is a nightmare because no one knows what it says and the government can win any sort of dubious case based on some obsecure page in the 20,000 pages. For the rich, the tax code is a headache, but the rich are generally not opposed to high taxes because they have shelters to avoid the higher rates.

In 2005, Americans will work 70 days to afford their federal taxes and 37 more days to afford state and local taxes. Other categories of spending measured in the report include housing and household operation (65 days), health and medical care (52 days), food (31 days), transportation (31 days), recreation (22 days), clothing and accessories (13 days), saving (2 days) and all other (42 days).

What is needed, Gold Dragon and anyone else reading this thread, is a simple tax code that can be understood by a high school graduate and is not so long.

First, nothing is fair in this world

    Second, most people don't itemize

Third, God invented farm price supports by requiring burnt offerings.

Fourth, the poor people don't pay income tax and poor people with kids can get their SS payments refunded.

Fifth, half the economy is under the table and untaxed.

Sixth, young people seldom vote and old people control the voting. The NEA and AARP can control the outcome of any election.

Seventh, people get something for their tax money. It isn't burned as God required in his farm program.

If you can read the 20,000 pages or 9,000,000 words and understand them, let us know.
