I came across this song in my preparation for Christmas. I think the lyrcis are powerful, and it's a pretty song. What do you think?

To hear it, follow this link... http://www.andrew-peterson.com/music.php

    Labor of Love
    Andrew Peterson
Sung by Jill Phillips and Andrew Peterson on "Behold the Lamb of God" (2004)

It was not a silent night
There was blood on the ground
You could hear a woman cry
    In the alleyways that night
On the streets of David's town
And the stable was not clean
    And the cobblestones were cold
And little Mary full of grace
With the tears upon her face
Had no mother's hand to hold

It was a labor of pain
It was a cold sky above
But for the girl on the ground in the dark
With every beat of her beautiful heart
It was a labor of love

    Noble Joseph at her side
    Callused hands and weary eyes
There were no midwives to be found
In the streets of David's town
In the middle of the night
So he held her and he prayed
Shafts of moonlight on his face
But the Baby in her womb
He was the Maker of the moon
He was the Author of the faith
That could make the mountains move

It was a labor of pain
It was a cold sky above
But for the girl on the ground in the dark
With every beat of her beautiful heart
It was a labor of love
For little Mary full of grace
With the tears upon her face
It was a labor of love

It was not a silent night
On the streets of David's town

I can't say it appealed too much to me. My first impression was that it glorifies Mary, not Christ, and it might be argued that it's saying Christ was a fruit of Mary's devotion. I don't know if I'd go that far, but it's close. I think a Roman Catholic could easily take it there.

It's not distinctly Christian enough for me to be used in a Christmas service.

I think its really pretty. And as part of a musical, it probably doesnt deify Mary.

I think if I were directing a Christmas play about the Nativity, that Matthew Begats song would be a great intro. The Narrator could be a kind of troubadour.

I did think "Matthew's Begats" was very different and great!

Wow -- what great words. I'll have to open the link and find the music. I'm sorry -- I don't know how it is "Christian enough." Hope you are able to use this.

I decided not to use it in our choirs' Christmas presentation. One of my ladies is going to sing it in our 12/23 evening service. I really like the song... especially the light in which it portrays Joseph.
