This thread is also about Lehaye, who in my opinion has let money become the driving force behind "Left Behind".

If you will remember, it was going to be a three book set. What book are we on now.

Now, Lehaye has reached a new low, in my opinion.

He has started a series of "Tom Clancy" style military books. In itself, I see nothing wrong with this. The books show what happens during this side from the viewpoint of soldiers in the middle east and around the world. It contains a lot of technical stuff for those who like this type of book.

Now, here is my problem. The book is coauthored by Mel Odom. I may be wrong, but I don't think Lehaye writes much as all. I think he comes up with the ideas and lets the writers who work with him do the hard work (and believe me writing is some of the hardest work a person can do).

I didn't know Mel Odom was from Oklahoma, but when I found out, I became interested to know who he was. The book claimed he had written several novels and the easiest way to check this out is to go to Amazon and do a book search.

Sure enough, here is Mel Odom, the new LeHaye author and also the creator of "Sabrina, the teenage witch", "Buffy the vampire killer." and other "mystic style" books for teenagers.

Anybody know any truth about this and why LeHaye would pick Odom to write his new book series?

The new book I am talking about is "Left Behind Apocalypse Dawn; The Earth's last days: The battle begins, based on the Best-Selling Left Behind Series" Lehaye's name is not even on the book. Mel Odom's name is right on the front.

    What say you?

The books are Mel's. They are franschized
from LaHay. Finall Mel got to writing books
with his name on them (He used to write
    books for other people's names).

    I took a course at a vo-tech once with
    Mel Odom: adventure writing.

Mel seems like a pretty good writer. In reality I didn't sound like it above, but I tend to cut some slack for fiction writers. A lot of people come down on things like a curse word here and there, but in all reality it is impossible to make a book realistic without SOME realism. I certainly don't mean you have to have graphic sex scenes.

Was Mel a good teacher? I bet that was good. I play around with fiction and dream of the day I will get my first fiction manuscript finished.

I think you guys need to remember that these books are fiction

good reading but none the less fiction

the Lord Has blesses Lehaye to be financially prosperous with his left behind series.

my question to the topic starter
what concern is it to you how much money he makes from these publications.

I dont think jealousy and covetchessness is a fruit of the spirit my friend.

I'm sorry, Phillip, but I do not read science fiction. However, I did have a very good conversation with the woman who writes the books for a world-famous evangelist. He is famous, owns a multi-million dollar home, etc., and the real author of the books lives in the other part of down. And this woman is not given any credit in any of the books! (No, she does not write Billy Graham’s books).

Wouldn't surprise me, Craig. I have also heard that Billy Graham's books are "ghost written". (Not "Holy Ghost", either.)

Then again, I don't think LeHaye actually writes much, I think the writing is all his partners.

People do not realize that coming up with book ideas and stories is easy. The HARD part is the writing.

WHERE in my post do you see that I am jealous or even CARE if Lehaye is a millionaire or billionaire. I hope he is rich. You need to read my post (and possiblly remove a log from thine eye) before you accuse me of being covetchess (sic) or jealous.

My question was, "Is money DRIVING his decisions?" I could care less how much Lehaye has. I am concerned if Lehaye will use his talents be driven by the money he has and cause him to print or write material that is supposedly "Christian Fiction", but in reality it is just "FICTION".

Let me also explain THAT before you come back on me about fiction writers. I don't have a problem with anybody writing fiction, even if it doesn't have a Christian theme. But, when you put it under the genre of "Christian Fiction", then I think that a certain standard ought to be upheld.

I really don't have that much problem with Mel doing the writing, I was simply asking a question.

Are we clear on accusing me (or anybody else) of being a sinner and having "sin" as my ulterior motive?

Phillip you asked meAre we clear on accusing me (or anybody else) of being a sinner and having "sin" as my ulterior motive?

so you are not a sinner?
Friend we are ALL sinners, Because you are saved does not mean you are without sin only one man fits that description and you are not Him!

I dont know what your motives are but I do have the discernment to know when someone is being judgemental of another person without any reason other than to voice their opinion about them

maybe I used a wrong choice of words
yes I certanly saw some jealousy in your post and you are most certanly being very Judgemental of the man!
Need I remind you what Jesus said about Judging others?

I think you need to come down off your high horse a notch or 2 and be a little more conccience about what you write about other folks!

    now am I clear enough
or do I need to scream it out to you?

furthermore if mister Lehaye were a member of this board would another member be allowed to pass judgment on him as you so blaitantly have?

as you being a moderator of this board I think you should be extra careful on what you asy about other people

if youre toes feel like they have been stepped on then I have done my job properly. Now I have said my peace and that is all I have to say about the matter.

    Have a Nice day!

Just to clarify, I wouldn't classify these books as Science Fiction, more like Military Fiction--along the lines of Harold Coyle, Ed Ruggero or some Tom Clancy. Definitely not Science Fiction.

Dr. LaHaye is a fiction writer.

He gained fame and popularity with his historical fiction rewriting on "temperaments" that sold millions of copies in the 60's and 70's, until folks found out it was outdated philosophies rejected by Aristotle. Not THAT is history!

Then the "left behind" science fiction that never claimed to be anything more than fiction.

    Now military fiction.

I see nothing wrong with a writer/team of writers writing fiction.

Just be sure everyone knows that it is fiction and not true.

The latest is "The Rising," a prequel to "Left Behind." Sort of an "Omen" or "Rosemary's Baby," meaning it's about AntiChrist being born, and his "rise" to the point of power.

I enjoyed the "Left Behind" series. But I think that this is too much now. Well, I hope he uses his money wisely.

LaHaye has obviously been money-driven for a long time. Have you seen all the really CRAPPY books that have come out with the Left Behind style cover? Books like "These Will Not Be Left Behind" and "TIm LaHaye's Bible Prophecy Dictionary" among others. LaHaye has marketed MANY books using his Left Behind stuff.

LaHaye does believe the Left Behind series is Scriptural and not fiction. Yes, its fiction, but he believes it is based on a true end times scenario.

My true encounter with Tim Lehaye

I have known who Tim Lehaye is since his
book on tempermants..it was the talk of any
D.T.S. trained person in the early 80's..some
people took it as gospel others as something
to have fun with..I was the latter..but I did
read it since it struck home in areas.

In 1990 I was head usher at a church in the
DFW area..typical sunday morning I am getting
ready putting out church bulletins, perparing
the others...getting organized for the mad
rush and try to encourage late comers to get
a seat withoug disrupting the service.

I walk to the big glass door ant there trying
to get in was a man about 5'7 black suit ..black
tie and very black hair(more about the black hair
later)..so I unlock the door and I knew who he
was ..I extended my hand and before it was
fully extended he said "which way to your pastor's
office" he finally shook my hand...I said I
will show you ..he said "no..no..no just point the
way" so I pointed the way..hallway end and to the
right...again his hair caught my attention...coal
black..blacker than black...I kind of squinted
and could see the blacknees sort of flaking off..
did not say a word..but deduced that it was
a major hair dye job way over done...so he heads
back ..I halfway go with him to make sure he
gets there...turn back and as I turn back there
are black smudges on the creamed colored carpet.
It verified my thoughts about a hair dye job
    over done.

Anyway thats My Tim Lehaye encounter ..could not
remember for the life of me ..what he talked
on at our church it was short ..and we paid
him 10,000 dollars..whew! but one thing for
sure as evidence of the black smudges on the
    carpet...He left something behind.

I was converted in Tim LaHaye's Scott Memorial Baptist church in 1959. I was 19 and a nogoodnik beach bum!

I will NOT defend Tim's books or hair or bank account or eschatology. But I will say a word about his bygone days.

From about 1959-1965 or so, IMO Tim was a fine pastor ,and so was Jerry Riffe the youth pastor there at Scott great with us college age young people. Tim let me preach twice at Scott, and under Jerry's leadership the youth group was quite active doing rescue mission, prison honor camp, military evangelism, and preaching on corners in downtown San Diego.

Much of any good I am now for God I owe to Tim and Jerry because of those formative years.

    What happened after 1965?

I am glad that God uses who he does to lead us to Christ!

I was describing my perception of LaHaye while I was at Scott, later I went to a different church.
