I am going to purchase a new computer soon and am thinking about a laptop as opposed to a desk top. What are the pros and cons of each? For example repairs and upgrades.

Harder to do upgrades/repairs on laptops yourself.

Other than that, most laptops today are completely acceptable desktop replacements.

Me, I'm holding out another year or two for a tablet PC....

Don is right for the most part. I've found what most people are doing nowadays is getting a laptop and having a docking station. That way they can get up and go whenever they please

I have a new Compaq laptop for work with all the bells and whistles: cd burner, dvd player, etc. I love it. Makes a compelling case to 'down-size' from a desktop. Biggest downside is that they are somewhat fragile. Drop it and it's probably history.

Think it's largely personal choice,I use a laptop most of the time for convenience. the down side is the screen size, and the keyboard size.

Screen size is important if you have eye problems(I wear glasses everywhere except the shower and when i sleep) and the slightly smaller keys drustrate my fingers at times:)

Have used a tablet at times at work, the machine is great, but I found it's small size sooooo frustrating .. wouldn't chose to have one long term.

Also, here in Australia, the price of a laptop seems to be about $800 - $1000 (Aus dollars) more expensive than the equivalent desktop. And a desktop generally forces you into more ergonomic working practices [IMG]

I have both a laptop and a desktop for work and find both to be a lifesaver in business. With that said I can give you both pros and cons of each.

Pros of a laptop: Portable, space saver

Cons of a laptop: custom only parts make it harder and expensive to replace damaged components, keyboard is small and compacted into laptop and can make it a little awkward to use, expensive!!!

*Desk notes are a little cheaper and actually use a desktop processor as opposed to a mobile processor.

Pros of desktop: cheaper!!! interchangable and upgradable (also cheap),
Cons of desktop: space hog (unless you get a more expensive desktop with a flat panel monitor),

all in all, you should stick with a desktop UNLESS you really have a need to take your computer with you when you travel, otherwise the laptop is not really worth it.

I use a desktop at work and a laptop at home. Depending on your needs they are both useful.

As others have said, about the only thing you can upgrade in a laptop is memory. Someone said the keyboards are small. My laptop has a full size key board. I have no problems typing. If you like to watch tv and be on BB at the same time go with a laptop. [IMG]

Laptops are more versitile. But they are always behind about 6 months in technology.

Desktops can be upgraded. But if you buy a new desktop, by the time upgrading is needed, it will be cheaper to buy a new unit.

Monitor size should be a key thing you are looking for. A laptop with a 15" screen is bigger than a normal tube screen. I have a toshiba with a 15" screen, they also come in 16".

    Hope this has helped. [IMG]
