Republican Sen. Larry Craig is citing Hillary Clinton as the reason he opposes renewing the Patriot Act in its current form, saying Mrs. Clinton is likely to abuse the security measure if she becomes president - unless additional safeguards are built in.

"There will come a day when there will not be a George W in the White House," Sen. Craig warned, after calling top conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday to explain his position. "And tragically enough, and I hope never, it could be a Hillary Clinton."

Craig wondered aloud: "Who will be her attorney general, and what might he or she do to your liberties and mine? There's the question."

The Idaho Republican told Limbaugh: "You know, I've been here a little while, and I remember Janet Reno, and I remember Waco and Ruby Ridge."

For a man who is so worried about how dangerous this patriot act could be in the hands of Hillary Clinton, he certainly has no problems voting for it again. Interesting. Perhaps, he understands the idea of not throwing the baby our with the bath water. Or, perhaps he understands how important the Patriot Act is to our national security.

Hillary will abuse it? I've got news for you, GW and his ilk will abuse it too. No branch of government should have that much power.

The patriot act can and will be abused, just wait and see. It doesn't have to be Hillary either.

Is it possible that a future president could misuse nukes, and possibly go on a genocidal terror spree? Should we get rid of them? Please explain.

A President cannot "push the button" by him/herself. There are built in checks and balances. It is very complex, and much of it is classified.

We need government to stay within its constitutional boundries and not look for ways around it. I do not want to live in a police state with ever increasing control over my life and privacy even if it is a "good christian" like GW.

We don't live in a police state. And Bush is hardly what I would call a "good Christian". He is, however, a good president.

We're a short distance from being in a police state and GW is the worst man to inhabit the White House since Lincoln imo.

We are nowhere close to being a police state, and Jimmy Carter is the absolute worse president to inhabit the White House, ever. Bush is a good president, and his long term legacy is yet to be seen.

We are a long way from a police state. Perhaps you should move to Iran for a year, or China, and then tell us where we sit.

Police state. HAH!!!! You wouldn't know a police state if...oh never mind.

I agree completely. Carter is the worst ever. And I think Bush will be viewed in a very positive light in history because of the things he is doing. Regan was not liked by many while in office either and history is showing what a strong leader and president he was.

When the Patriot Act was first passed it was clearly a knee jerk reaction to the events of 9/11/01. Fortunately, the Congress put a sunset provision in it so that it could be revisited in four years. Senator Craig now wants the safeguards put it that should have been placed there in 2001 but circumstances made it hard to do so at the time.

I support Senator Craig and the other patriots who want better protection for our civil liberties than the original Patriot Act provided.

What good are civil liberties to the 3000 folks who died on 9/11 ?

I support the patriot act. My lifestyle is such that I didn't even notice it the first time. Neither has one person I know.

Have you ever noticed the first amendment. Would you feel comfortable if it was done away with? Do you really not mind seeing rights restricted because you or someone you know has not been affected?
