My 3rd grade teacher introduced our class to the children's classics, including Heidi, Charlotte's Web, and of course Little House in the Big Woods. I fell in love with the Little House Series and read them over and over.

I recently heard that the little town Laura Ingalls Wilder lived in (DeSmet, South Dakota) is now a tourist attraction, and you can visit the house they lived in. It has been preserved as a museum.

Has anyone visited? Or would anyone like to visit? I'd love to see it!

There is a place like that here in the Ozarks that people come and visit.

My mother used to read those books to me when I was little, I always enjoyed them.

Oh, now I want to go there, too!

I'd like to visit both places with my sister, who is a fan of the series as well. I know we'd have a great time.

My 4th graders had a story in their reader last year that said that Laura's daughter, Rose, was the one who insisted that her mother write down her stories.

Rose had heard them all of her life and was convinced that people would love to hear them.

Laura was born in 1867 and died in 1957, so she saw a great deal of change in our country. She didn't think "modern" people would be interested in those stories that she told her daughter, but was she ever wrong!

Rose kept after her until she finally agreed.

The rest, of course, .... well, you know.

We visited the one in S.Dakota and I wasn't real impressed but I'm not to much into that kind of things and also we have a lot of homes in this area restored that looked like it. But if your ever up that way don't miss the Corn Palace, it was really neat.

There is a L.I.Wilder museum in southeastern Kansas near Independence.
If I remember correctly, Pa went to town for supplies and was gone for over a week because of bad weather.

If you want a little more of Laura Ingalls Wilder, you might lok for the book:

    Words From A Fearless Heart

Get a deeper glimpse of how much she believed in the Lord.

    Cheers,

    Jim

PS. Scarlett..In this book we learn that Rose actually wrote the last few books whilst her mother dictated the stories.

Yes, I think you are correct on that, Jim.

I just find it fascinating that she lived from 1867 to 1957. Just think, going from covered wagons to Sputnik!

From just after the Civil War to the Korean War!

    It boggles my mind.

    Jim,

I found Words From a Fearless Heart on eBay--only $7.99, so I bought it!

    Scarlett,

It boggles my mind, too! Her generation probably saw more change that any other. My kids actually did school projects about her. I thought that was pretty cool! We didn't study about her at all, the teacher just read her book to us during quiet time. I'm glad the schools are teaching about her life now. [IMG]

    Scarlett,
I hear you on the age thing. I was born in 1927 and here it is 2006. You can hardly imagine the changes I have seen in my lifetime. I still wrestle with it.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Me, too! I was born in 1957, and my kids can't imagine a world without cable TV, VCR's and the internet. But I grew up without all that, and maybe, just maybe, we were better off. In some ways, anyway. [IMG]
