I'm a huge fan, and have read all her books. We're planning a trip to the town where she met and married her husband, Almanzo (DeSmet, S. Dak.), hopefully this fall.

I guess not much I thought she was just a character on a TV show.

When I said this to my wife she gave my head a pat and said "bless your heart" That is a southern way of saying your such an idiot!

I read all her books back in 8th grade. I loved the fact that they were based on her own true story.

I read her books to my daughters as they grew up.

My personal favorites were Farmer Boy and The Long Winter.

I'll start reading them again soon with my (almost) 3 y.o. grandson
[unless someone suggests a more manly collection of books].

I have been to the real "Little House on the Prairie" several times. It is in southeast Kansas, not far from Independence.

Like many pioneers, the family did a lot of travelling, and they farmed or settled for a short while in several spots.

Laura and Almanzo eventually bought a farm near Mansfield, MO where they lived for many years. Rose Wilder Lane, their daughter, was a newspaper reporter and travelled the world. Even to Vietnam as a war correspondent when she was almost 80.

Almanzo Wilder, it would seem, is my sixth cousin, several times removed.

I believe I saw an historic home in either Nebreaska or South Dakota, where she once was, or was one similar, at least.

And the town of Walnut Grove, MN, the setting of the TV series, has a church founded and pastored by a schoolmate of mine in Bible College, who resigned a successful pastorate in OH, when he was led of the Lord to go to MN, at this site:
