(Washington-AP) -- The head of the Episcopal Church in
Washington D-C says the Bible's condemnations of homosexual
    behavior are outdated.
Bishop John Chane says the Scripture passages condemning
homosexual acts are from the Old Testament and the apostle Paul,
who he describes as a mid-life convert from Judaism to
    Christianity.
He says the Old Testament was echoed by Paul and has been
replaced by the love of Jesus reflected in the Gospels.
Chane calls Paul's teaching "an early theology of the
church which, in fact, has been in the process of changing."
The Episcopal Bishop of Washington says he favors church
ceremonies to bless gay couples and believes that the Holy Spirit
guided the election of a gay bishop in New Hampshire.

This is nothing compared to the row that is engulfing the Anglican Church over here over the appointment of an openly gay man to be Bishop of Reading. It will in my opinion split the Church of England - evangelical congregations will have to leave and there will be a liberal, Established 'rump'. No bad thing in some respects - on the one hand, it will be good for the evangelicals to be separate from the liberals - but also the Anglican Communion will be the poorer for the absence of evangelicals.

I think Episcopalians have been moving this direction for some time. The retired Bishop of Newark, NJ, John Shelby Spong has written several books advocating a more liberal view of sexuality in general (not just homosexuality) among other topics. Some of his books are entitled, "Why Christianity Must Change or Die", and "Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism". Agree with him or not, they make for an interesting insight into his perspectives and into more liberal Christian thought today.

The only thing that can save the Anglican church is a split where the Evangelicals that focus on Gods word as literal go and form and Evangelical church.

The Uniting Church in Australia which is Methodist, COngregationa and 1/2 Presbyterian did not deal with this issue when it came up and now have 14 openly gay ministers. Consequently this denomination is a shell of what it once was. Churches are closing all over the Australia to be bulldozed for housing developments.

Yet the Pentecostals and the Evangelicals are growing rapidly in Australia, Baptist's and Salvation Army and the AOG are opening up many new churches, interestingly that all of these teach that the bible is Gods literal word and not some type of collection of "Guidelines".

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. (1 Tim 4:3-4)
