Reading this book "The Soul Winners Fire" and enjoying it. Do not agree with everything but I agree with much. This chapter "Evangelistic preaching" is especially good. He is all for preaching repentance, preaching hell fire and I am sure if he were alive today would agree with Paul Washer who is a modern day John the Baptist preacher. How rare is it to look at your congregation and call them a bunch of snakes and vipers? That's what John did and that's what Paul Washer does in his own way, especially with the Youth Conference sermon. Get this book!

For the 100th time I am WOTM Preferred so although Rice does not use the law I still can agree with his evangelistic approach.

John the Baptist did not have a congregation. Paul Washer is a rabble rouser.

I would hope that any pastor would NOT call his baptized and professing body of believers "snakes and vipers".

Did Jesus call saved people that? And how we to blast fellow saints, or to pray and love them and forgive?
Blasting is warning the lost of hell, but not for those going to heaven, but mor ein love rebuke one to get back into the fold!

No but a street preacher may do so. In fact I may...

Does John R. Rice, in the book "Soul Winners Fire" advocate street preachers to call their listeners "vipers" and "snakes"? If not you have succeeded in derailing your own thread in only two posts.

Great to read this. I'm glad you are being blessed. I was looking at one of the books from when he was in his fifties and saw where he was thankful for the days back when he was young and used to preach on the street corner. ;)

Found the quote: "'They shall walk and not faint.' This is plodding, unspectacular work. How I thank God for the years I preached in country school houses, in jails, on street corners! How I thank Him for the thousands He has helped me to win, one by one! That is walking, though we would rather run or fly!" (God's Cure for Anxious Care, p. 63).

John R. Rice didn't do that to his congregation when he pastored, but it wouldn't surprise me if he had done so in some circumstance or other. Usually, his sermons are full of compassion. But he was not afraid to name a Pharisee for what he was (but never naming names).

Jesus only let loose against those whom he knew were lost and smug in their own rightiousness!
