Learning to Study Scripture

Reference Bibles, study Bibles and commontaries can be very useful. But over the years I have discovered in my studies my learned understanding at times have differed.

Reference Bibles, study Bibles and commontaries provide information that reading the word of God and word studies do not provide.

But studying the word of God and word studies are what helped lead me to the different understandings.

Then there are also other specialty books and books on Biblical topics which can help in ones understanding of the word of God.

I’ve caught a little heat in the past for suggesting that we need to learn to study Scripture and that biblical illiteracy is a real problem today despite the availability of bibles.

I do not mean this in any way to detract from the work of the Spirit in the life of the believer or in understanding God’s Word. I believe that the gospel is very simple and is foolishness to the world. But the study of Scripture by the believer is not simplistic or easy. It is a lifelong endeavor and is worthy our labor.
Amen, Jon.
Any other recommendations?
I recommend finding a faithful translation of His preserved words in both the Greek and Hebrew and following the Lord's commands in 1 Peter 2:2 and 2 Timothy 2:15.

Past that, I don't think anything more is needed...
As the Lord has promised that we as believers already have everything that we need that pertains to life and godliness,
especially His Spirit that dwells within each and everyone of us.

1 Corinthians 2:6-16.
2 Peter 1:3.
1 John 2:20-27.

From my experience, I never had to learn how to study the Bible, it just came naturally once I actually did it.
I figure that if a thick-headed and sinful mess of a man like me can pick it up and eventually come to understand it ( and there are parts that I still don't quite understand ), anyone who is saved can do it. :)

I agree that it can take a very long time, so to everyone reading this, please...
"Study to show thyself approved..."

It's well-worth the effort.
