I'm not sure, Teresa. I have always thought that
Hollywood put out their ideas re family, teens
parents, neighborhoods, etc., then we watched it,
THEN we turned into the family, teens, parents,
neighborhoods, etc. they portrayed.

 

I think it is cyclical. Society changes, TV and movies show it, but more to etreme, society catches up to the extreme and TV goes farther. Then Society, then Tv, then society.....

 

I agree with all that has been said but just once didn't you just want to pound Eddie for giving everyone the business?... Brother Glen

 

Just view one episode of the Osbournes, with their filth and degradation, and you will instantly know what has gone wrong with Hollywood, with society at large and with us......we allow it to happen.

Yep... Only white people lived in Mayfield, except for that Latin kid that Beaver befriended for one episode. (That was considered risky TV back then! ) Women were also exclusively depicted as housewives or school teachers. Beaver did have a school principal who was a woman which was pretty progressive back then!

Yep. They also lied to their parents, their teachers and their friends. The boys also did things behind their parent's backs and occasionally blatantly disobeyed them.

Yep. Hugh Beaumont (the father and creator of the show) was a Methodist minister - he earned a Master of Theology in 1946. His nickname was "Binky".

The world of television is an artificial world. How many mothers wore pearls to clean house?

That's a little bit of an overstatement... "Seventh Heaven" (a show I don't really care for) has reasonably moral kids and a minister for a father. There are others if you look for them.

I would like more time in front of the television to relax, but I'm too busy taking care of important things myself!

Is the old adage correct when it says that a society tends to gravitate to its lowest common denominator?

One could contrast what is coming out of the Mouseketeers now with the Mickey Mouse Club of the 50's, ie. Brittany Spears, Christina Aguilera,(sheer iniquity), with Anette Funicello,(who all of us guys had a crush on back then).

Decency and modesty are persona-non-grata, in our secular society of today. The Word says that in the last days that iniquity shall abound and the love of many shall wax cold.

Come to think of it, how could all those Brady kids possibly share just one bathroom, especially given that it had no toilet?

 

I agree with what Mark posted...it's circular.

About Leave it to Beaver, even the woman who played the mom, later admitted that no woman cleans house in high heels. It was a lovely picture of how things could be...but was not really a representation of how things really were.

Someone mentioned Seventh Heaven as being a good show. I agree it is a good show, but by Baptist standards, the Camden family would represent a very liberal Christian family. There are some things that are represented that I have a bit of a problem with. But for entertainment value..it's better than some.

As far as the comment made about the Osbornes...What can I say but they are an extraordinary family, they are not a representation of the majority.

 

If life was really like the TV shows depicted it to be, I'm glad I didn't live then. Besides the fact that I enjoy the variety in our culture, and the options available to me as a woman, it's hard to envision myself as a poodle-skirt-n-saddle shoe-wearing Mary Sue.

 

John, as I tell my husband...."It is a T.V. show, that's how. " Did you know that in addition to having one bathroom for all the kids to share, that house which was touted to be a two story, was actually one. But the part about that show that I thought was the best was that they had a housekeeper...and weren't apparently wealthy...just regular middle of the road people...with a housekeeper. Alice was my favorite.

 

I noticed TV Land had a 48 hour Sanford & Son marathon a couple of weekends ago. Now there is a politically correct sitcom for you (NOT). Some of the things Fred (aka Redd Foxx) said on that show would definitely cause the final "I am coming to join you Elizabeth-big one" in today's PC TV world.

Fred Sanford - Archie Bunker - the Beave - and Gilligan all on the same network. Gotta love TV Land.

 

Yes! That was me Bro. Glen! I could not stomach him. And Lumpy! He was a spoiled brat!

Eddie always talked the Beav into trying stuff normally the Beav would have never done. He was evil Bro. Glen...I tell you evil!....

I really felt for the Beav when he climbed that coffee cup on a dare by Whitey, and was stuck up there. I was glad his parents were like they were. What an embarrasment that had to be. And Eddie with his little digs.

I love Beaver and watch it all the time. They had some kids who did a lot behind their parents backs, and lied a lot. I wonder how people thought of that back then?

 

Now everybody knows that Leave It To Beaver made a comeback with The New Leave It To Beaver... with the whole cast as grown ups... Eddie and Eddies son... Like Father like son... I wanted to pound him too along with Daddy!... What did you think of it?... Brother Glen

You are correct. I was going from memory, and my memory was not very good this morning. I confused Beaumont's directing with the creation of the series. I saw the Binky thing on Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com) a few weeks ago and I thought it was kind of funny.

Actually I felt sorry for Eddies son. I think he wanted to be good. But I think his whole life was a mess up from the begining of birth. He had Eddie for a father. I think it was more that he had to be bad. No one showed him how to be different. He truly wanted what Beavers family had.
