This series has kind of been marketed to death.

Nothing new here. I remember wanting to puke when I saw the Left Behind Prophecy Study Bible in a Christian Bookstore. I just wish they would be honest in their marketing and call it "Left the Scripture Behind".

Or even "Left Good Writing Behind". . .

(My apologies to those who love the series.)

The game includes a portable vacuum you hold in the air to vacuum in the elect during the Rapture. Then later in the game one learns that John Calvin is one of the two prophets.

Left Behind Could Have Been Better

==I tried to read the "Left Behind" book and the "Tribulation Force" book to see what all the fuss was about. I could not do it. The writing was that bad  . So I went to the local used book store and got several of the Left Behind books on tape. I got through all of the ones I had, then sold them back. Not that good, really. I can't figure out what the fuss is about. In fact EVERY "Christian" novel I have read is the same way. My step mother let me read several of hers and I only got a few pages into each of those before I had to put them down. The only exception is "The Visitation". That book kept me on the edge of my seat.

The "Left Behind" books are over-marketed (sp?) there is no doubt about it. In fact they are still releasing new books! Yep, the prequels keep coming! In fact prequel number three "The Rapture", as it is called, will be released on 6/6/06. I got that news from leftbehind.com.

Btw, I have heard Tim LaHaye speak in person (twice). He is not that good of a public speaker. Norman Geisler is not either. However Ed Hindson will bring down the house, as will Ergun Caner. Even if you have certain differences with Hindson and/or Caner (and I do) it is still worth your time to listen to them speak (in person). Not sure what that has to do with anything...??

As for the theology of Left Behind? Well I am a pre-tribulational, premillennial, dispensationalist (in line with Ryrie, Walvoord, Pentecost, etc). So while I (in general) favor the theology of "Left Behind", the books are terrible reading. As for the movies...well the first one was "ok", the second was "bad", and the third one was "ok". I guess three times is not the charm?

The problem with the left behind series is that it is a work of fiction that may have some truth to it. It appeals to those who place more importance in guessing dates and times and signs than telling a lost world about Jesus. While we are told to be ready, and to be eagerly awaiting the return of Jesus, we are also told that no one has a clue as to the exact time. It shifts what is important to what is not. No matter when Jesus returns, what difference does it make for the lost or if you as a Christian are not doing what God would have you to do (like tell others about Jesus).

Rick Warren, he of Saddlesore Community Church and the Purpose Driven Car or whatever, is linked to this game: Mark Carver, Exec of Saddleback, is also on the board of the company who makes the game. Now why doesn't that surprise me?
