Lets all blame FEMA for the weather

    There was an interview last night between the mayor of Myrtle Beach SC and a news anchor in NY regarding the upcoming hurricane event about to graze the east coast.

    The MB mayor was highly complimentary of FEMA and said that the town had gone to FEMA training classes - and was prepared for bad weather. (In fact "bad weather" has hit MB a few times in the past as it turns out).

    The news anchor wanted a bit more "bad news" about FEMA and so she insisted that something went wrong in New Orleans - couln't the MB mayor at least at admit that SOME kind of communication breakdown had happened in govt at the local,state and federal level.

    He admitted there was a problem but then added - in our disaster plans "we DO NOT expect to see FEMA for at least 48 hours. The first responders are all local and state!"

    The News anchor said that the first responders were caught off guard, hit by the bad weather, unnable to respond in NO and so "What do you do then".

    The answer was pure GOLD.

    The MB mayor said - "well our guys are trained to MOVE The fire trucks, buses etc OUT OF THE WAY OF THE STORM and then move them BACK IN immediately following the storm".

    What a concept!!

    Take the first responders OUT of the way of danger and then move them RIGHT BACK IN as if they were 'pre-staged" to RESPOND immediately after the storm. INSTEAD of "pre-staged to quit their jobs" immediately afterwards!

    Maybe we should FIRE that MB mayor and teach all of our children to blame FEMA for the weather!

    ==This is why I love the Carolinas! We have been hit by plenty of bad storms (in '96 Fran left me without power for nearly two weeks, not to mention all the others) and we know how to deal with them. Maybe the New Orleans people need to be taking classes from us instead of looking at FEMA (or any other federal program).

    It has been astounding how totally unprepared NO was for a storm. Quite frankly, in comparison to mmmmmm say HOUSTON, they looked like they'd never really thought they were on the Gulf Coast.

    New Orleans is apparently unprepared for anything except that bacchanal called the Mardigras.
