A few years ago, I was flooded with stories from Christians that were all untrue! These were urban legends.

I though it might be good to put some of these to rest so we can do our part to keep them from spreading.

One is that Darwin converted to Christianity on his deathbed. Read this - it explains it all and how this legend became part of a "story" about Darwin.

    More on this:

    http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_cul4.htm

So, let's not keep passing this legend on - it makes believers look bad.

I can think of a few others but I'll wait and see if others want to post those.

    AMen, Sister Marcia!

Also, I heard a version of this Christian Urban Legend first in the late 50s,
before computers as we known them today were invented.
Anyway, this is a real looser. Anybody who knows a bit about
comptuers can see right into this Christian Urban Legend.

BTW, I used to have a copy of Harold Hill's book with this story in it :(

BTW again, I'm retiring next week after 30 years of being a Computer
    Programing Professional.

Before you retire, don't forget to sign this petition voicing your disapproval of the FCC's attempt to ban all Christian broadcasts!

I've got it right here in my hand......even got a pen for you to sign it with!

Thank You! I vote for this one. What is it about some people who think they should email you everything they find interesting? I get emails from some people from church and I just hit "delete" because I know what it is...:type:

There's a child in Eritrea with a rare bloodborn disease for whom we should all earnestly pray.

(The other four billion children we've never heard of can just look out for themselves.)

Unfortunately, there have always been ministers that spice up their sermon by embelishing a story. That story gets repeated as fact.

This is particularily true when ministers describe what others believe that don't agree with them. Mischaracterizing what an opponent believes is a great debating technique if you can get away with it. Unfortunately, during a sermon, no one can stand up and say that is not true.

Me too -- Every once in a while I fee I should open one from my sister just in case she said something else too -- the other day it was pray for 7 people in 7 seconds and then email them all so they can pray for 7 people in 7 second -- hurry 7 seconds isn't long. Don't break the prayer chain.

I got something similiar that said I needed to pray for x amount of people in so many seconds or my dad was going to die. I responded to the fowarder and they said they didn't even open it, but forwarded it because it came from someone they knew. I squashed it on my end. My dad is still alive.

and.... let us not forget the one, where the missionary out on the field and his kids playing the rock music and have the natives come and say, "hey, that sounds like the voodoo stuff we do!" or something to that effect...that stupid story was used in the Jack Chick Comic "Spellbound" which was 90% based on the so called "testimony" of John Todd, who by the way, is a convicted serial Rapist. I like Chick Tracts, but that one comic stunk in my opinion.

Thank you for the link... I was trying to figure out what to write about on my blog today, and when I read this thread it came to me... I included this link in my blog so my readers.... all 10 of em.... can save themselves from the lies.

BTW, if we pass these false stories along, when we stand in judgement, won't we be guilty of spreading lies?

I'm still waiting on the 1 million dollars that sheik in Saudia Arabia is suppose to be sending the church....poor thing, it was his dying wish to give a church the money to help spread the gospel....

This is like the computer version of the chain letter where you are to pass a message on to so many people and they pass it on, etc. etc.

These things are based in the un-Christian belief in luck!!

I email the person who sends them to me and point out the problem and why they should not be passing this on. I think we should all do this!

I think there are several versions of the Proctor and Gamble one. One popular one is that the president of P & G was on Phil Donahue (I think later it was Oprah or someone else) and admitted to being a Satanist! This is so laughable that I am amazed people would believe it, but they do! I worked in a place where someone actually pasted this info on the fridge (this was around '95).

A Satanist at this level of power would not publicly admit it, to begin with (don't ask me how I know  ). The P & G crescent moon and starts are hardly a symbol of Satanism

I agree with Tiny Tim that in passing these on, when we suspect their veracity or don't check them out, we are participating in spreading untruths or possible slander.

Don't pass them on! Write back to the sender and explain that it is not true. Give them a link to look at, something I do, usually a hoax/urban legend buster site like
    www.snopes2.com
