Letting others baptize

    As a pastor, do you let others baptize in your church?

    I've never had it come up. I've seen others do it with assistance though.

    When my husband baptizes a child, he lets the dad help (if the dad wants to.)

    I often share administering of baptism with my associate/minister to students.

    I believe the authority to baptize belongs to the church. In theory, the church can authorize anyone to perform a baptism.

    There have been occasions when I have allowed someone outside of the staff to baptize. There had never been any objections, to my knowledge.

    At our church, we've had deacons baptize. At most baptisms, it's one of our pastors who do the baptisms but I know we've had one of the ministry leaders baptize as well (he runs the special needs ministry at church so needed to do the baptism at the VA hospital with the special ramp and lift for the handicapped).

    Sometimes our student pastor baptizes, especially with teenagers.

    I have let believing, involved fathers baptize their children when they want to. As dh1948 said, I believe the authority lies with the church so the church can authorize anyone to baptize.
