As this column is written by someone on the libertarian left and I am on the libertarian right, I agree with just about everything in this column:

    Everything in Moderation
    By Thomas L. Knapp

The usual libertarian retort to accusations of "extremism" is Barry Goldwater's dictum: "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice ... moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue." The sentiments ring true, but I'd like to take a different approach. My operating hypothesis may strike the reader as bizarre, but I believe it is defensible:

I contend that libertarians are moderates. As a matter of fact, I contend that a survey of the cratered no-man's land that we call "American politics" reveals libertarians as the only moderates, and that the more "extreme" the libertarian, the more "moderate" he or she is relative to the assortment of cranks, thieves, murderers and degenerates currently lobbing shells at one another from the respective trenches of the "conservative" and "progressive" forces fighting for rare and transient moments of dominance over that no-man's land.

Dog eat dog, every man for himself, is more moderate than rules and regulations with a little socialism (social security, medicaid, progressive taxes)? Call me a wild woman, but I prefer a socialist democratic republic.

A pretty apt description of the current American political landscape dominated by the Authoritian Left and the Authoritarian Right - aka, by and large, as the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.

That's why all political parties should be banned! George Washington spoke against political parties in his farewell speech.

had a great definition for a libertarian...short and succinct ..captured it all. Drats if I can remember it....

but to put it into a picture a typical libertarian wants a hermit existence
with "no trespassing " signs posted every other yard...changing his oil and radiator flush all over the ground...mongrel dogs...etc,..you get the picture.
