In John 12:20-22 some Greeks came to Philip and asked him to take them to Jesus. They said, "We would see Jesus." Jesus began in vs 23 to speak of his coming death..."Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone...." After the Father spoke of heaven, Jesus said these words in vs 32, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. This he said, signifying what death he should die."

Jesus made it clear in this passage that being lifted up spoke of his death on the cross, whereby he would provide salvation for the human race. It was the sinful men of that day and ultimately our sins which caused Jesus to be lifted up on Calvary's cross.

 

When a brother or sister in Christ stumbles or falls into sin, we have a choice.

1. Wow, did you blow it! And you said you were a Christian! I don't think any "real" Christian could do that. ...

2. Don't panic. That is not that uncommon a mistake. It's not the end. Keep your eyes on Jesus. He knows how to get you out of this. In the meantime, I can do xxxx to help you out and/or give you xxxx to ease the load right now. Hang in there. You are loved!

You can beat someone down or lift them up.

Lifting Jesus up, for us, would mean exalting Him -- holding Him high in our esteem and love and respect and obedience.

One of my favorite verses of scripture that teaches what you are listing here is in Ephesians 5: 21 which says, "Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God." That word "submitting" comes from a Greek word, "Hupotasso"--and it means "to place in an orderly fashion under something." The word can be used to show either compulsory or voluntary subordination to others.

Another direction we can go on this is found in 1 Thessalonians 5: 12-23!!!

Helen and CircuitRider are battin' a thousand!! To the degree that I lift Jesus up--that's the degree I will lift my brother or sister up!! When I ain't liftin' them up---chances are--its because I ain't liftin' Jesus up! Now, the best way to lift others up--is in this thing called submission!! Us Southern Baptists can need to learn a lot in this direction!!

Edification. To by your own actions or words do or say something that generates a wholesome good feeling about that person and their desire to be Godly. To toot their horn. To encourage. To inspire. To hold that which is good in high esteem. To compliment.

To not ignore any honorable or noble act of kindness or earnestness or godliness. To say "well done" To say "Thank you" To say "you inspire me to do better" To prefer one another over lifting ourselves up.

 

I lifted weights in college--and found that each lift--it was me submittin' or gettin' myself under the weight. When throwin' the weights up--I, at the same time had to throw myself under--We can "throw ourselves UNDER" the weight of the person we lift! And I can still hear the fellow "spotters" yellin'---"STAY UNDER IT!! STAY UNDER IT! STAY UNDER IT!!!!!"
