Ligonier Ministries - What Do You Think Of Them?

A close Christian friend of mine gave me a gift subscription to a monthly magazine called, "Tabletalk", and it is from Ligonier Ministries. R.C. Sproul is the Executive Editor.

He felt that I would enjoy it.

Is my friend trying to proselytize me in some covert way into any abherrent biblical teaching?

It's actually a very good publication. I got like 3 or 4 free issues. Unless you think Reformation/presbyterian theology is abherrant, then I don't think you'll have a problem with it.

The main reason why I disagree with anything Sproul write is because he's infralapsarian. That's a whole 'nother fish to fry right there. Otherwise, he's pretty good.

I recommend it, and I think it will be enjoyable for you.

He is a great Bible teacher -- enjoy!

(another good point in his favor is that Dustin is kinda lukewarm on his teaching)

Dustin , I don't understand . On one hand you think "It's a very good publication ." Then you withdrawl your commendation by saying that you "disagree with anything R.C. writes because he's infralapsarian ."

I daresay there are many teachings of his that have little to nothing to do with his infralapsarianism .

I DO think it's a good publication, but i just don't agree with his infralapsarianism. Not exactly withdrawing the commendation, I just disagree with his position. Like I said, he's very good on other things.

Most likely I worded it wrong and didn't explain clearly enough.

I don't understand myself half the time, so join the club!

Dustin, please explain (for my sake) how you understand infra- and supralapsarianism? Thanks!

Supralapsarian = election before the fall

Infralapsarian = election after the fall

I get some good stuff out of his teaching, but his calvinistic bent is a bit much for me. I haven't supported his ministry, other than a couple books.

RC Sproul and his "Tabletalk" publication may be enjoyable for some, but when I asked for just ONE copy so I could determine if I wanted to continue receiving it, they sent me several more in rapid succession. All the while they were dunning me for money to support their ministry. Took about a year for them to quit

He and Benny Hinn can take a leap as far as i am concerned.

Admittedly he is Calvinist and I am almost as far as it is possible to be from a 5 point calvinist -- but his weekly radio broadcast is very insightful none-the-less.

Jim-1611 : You are not the least bit familiar with R.C. Sproul to put him in the same category as Benny Hinn ! It seems like your lack of level-headedness regarding the KJVO issue is about on the same plane as your understanding of Calvinism .

I think that remark about Sproul/Hinn was "tongue and cheek" in nature, and not making the two similar doctrinally. :)

At least some people get me.;) It was somewhat tongue in cheek.

My point is simply the similarity in begging for money 'ad infintum'. And I DO mean begging!

As for that KJVo remark that other fellow said, well......:BangHead:

AV - I'm sad to hear you say that. Hinn and Sproul aren't even in the same league. Hinn is a heretic. Sproul is a great Bible teacher and theologian.

R.C.'s a great teacher, I really enjoyed his radio broadcast when it was available in our area (sadly I can't pick it up any more).

I subscribed to TableTalk for a year a while back.

Good articles but they do have a weakness.
They give their view of a doctrine but generally don't present the opposing sides of an argument.

My favorite issue presented their view of baptism, which of course wasn't a Baptist view.
It was well argued and presented; I still keep the issue even though I disagree.

I also lean strongly towards dispensationalism, a view that R.C. Sproul does not hold.

If you can get past some of these "weaknesses", he is a solid teacher.

Enjoy his magazine; compare and contrast it with what you have been taught and use it as a springboard for further study.

==It is is a great ministry. It is not "abherrent biblical teaching" (unless you think men like Luther, Spurgeon, Whitefield, Newton, etc, were abherrent).
