Limbaugh blasted Mehlman's renunciation of GOP racial tactics: "Republicans are going to go bend over and grab the ankles"

From the July 14 edition of The Rush Limbaugh Show: [IMG]

LIMBAUGH: President Bush skipping this week's annual NAALCP convention for the fifth straight year, but that's not preventing the White House and the Republican Party from waging a drive to woo African-American voters. Ken Mehlman of the RNC is going to the NAALCP convention, and he is basically going to tell them how the Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln lost its way with African-American voters over the years and how determined the party is to get them back. He said, "We can't call ourselves a true majority unless we reach out to African-Americans and make it the party of Lincoln. There was a time when African-American support turned Democrat, and we didn't do enough to retain it. Now we want to build on the gains we made in the last election."

Know what he's going to do? He's going to go down there and basically apologize for what has come to be known as the Southern Strategy, popularized in the Nixon administration. He's going to go down there and apologize for it. In the midst of all of this, in the midst of all that's going on, once again, Republicans are going to go bend over and grab the ankles. They're going to the NAALCP. This is like going into Hyannisport and apologizing to [Sen.] Ted Kennedy [D-MA] for whatever and expecting him to become a supporter. It's like showing up at the [Sen.] Chuck Schumer [D-NY]-Joe Wilson press conference in 20 minutes and saying, "Okay, Ambassador Wilson, we apologize. We hope you'll support us. We can't become a majority party until people like you are voting for us." It is just -- it's absolutely absurd.

    --------------------------------------------------

I think Limbaugh is absurd...Melhman actually
did the right thing..and smart thing.

You're comment on this is absurd, ASLANSPAL. The NAALCP is quickly becoming a political irrelevancy. The GOP should ignore the NAALCP and continue to work to appeal to all Americans as individuals and not get into the dividing-people-by-group strategy of the liberals in the Democrat Party.

The NAALCPLD (National Association of American Liberal Colored People Lame Ducks).

They are irrelevant today and should be ignored. Rush is correct on this one.

There are probably more registered illegal aliens than African Americans.

    Bill,

Perhaps you ought to start a thread about that.

The NAACP got pushed aside for IBE (Indiana Black Expo). With a history of 35 years, IBE draws huge crowds from all over. It has a foundation and I am guessing that IBE has an endowment, probably from the Lilly Foundation and others. President Bush suggested that they work with a new foundation in Kansas City to help with home ownership. IBE has the ability to do anything that NAACP might be doing and more.

IBE is a major, major event that draws common people as well as the high and mighty. Plus IBE is polite to the GOP and gave Bush a Lifetime Achievement Award, a huge trophy. IBE approaches politics in a businesslike manner. Afterall, we are all Americans.

    Good-bye, NAACP, it's over.

Actually KenH what Ken Melhman did is the issue
and apologize for the divisive "southern strategy"
    which was divisive.

Are you saying that Ken Melhman was wrong to
    apologize for the "southern strategy"

As much as people want to use labels to dehumanize
these are still Afro-Americans they deserve respect and not quick soundbites that
    expose a severe bias.

There is only one Rush but multi-millions of
Afro-Americans..Rush is dead wrong...Melhman actually did a good thing.

One was humility the other arrogance(rush).

nothing from venom from rush just another rant to
rake in money and spur hatred. imho

I defend a republican on this and what he did
    was correct...period.

cmg I thought you said bushes speech was boring
which is it ..polite is a word in political speeches to express tolerance..in other words
    they survived the speech.

of course they will be polite...even the NAACP would treat him politely..what does everyone
    want! confirmation everytime bush speaks..he
already stages and scripts his appearances.

Matthew Tully , a columnist for the Indianapolis Star, writes that Bush "had a lot of time to prepare a thoughtful, meaningful speech for a major black organization -- but . . . struck out woefully with a boy-is-the-world-great defense of his presidency."

    While in Indianapolis

That is just where you are totally wrong, A-Pal, when you say that the NAACP was polite to Bush in 2000. The NAACP was impolite. That is the reason for their decline and fall.

The IBE sat through a boilerplate speech that listed all the pork barrel goodies dished out to the Black community. That part was funny. The rest of the speech was something that you have heard before. The speech was well-delivered and Bush was very personable and shook hands with many people. The Republican Governor of Indiana was there as well as the Democrat Mayor of Indy. Bush flew in Julia Carson, Black Democrat Congressman from Indy, on Air Force One and even kissed her when his speech ended.

Good-bye, NAACP. Just remember, who needs you?

Baloney mouse of course they were polite not
everything has to go bushes way in a staged
and scripted event but by and large anywhere the
president speaks the majority of the audience
is going to listen and be polite..period.

anyway the limbaugh (george wallace standing
in the door) piece is getting some headlines

Rush Limbaugh Blasts RNC Chairman For Olive Branch To Blacks
    by Joe Gandelman

Once upon a time there was a Republican National Committee. It wanted to defuse tensions with a group called the NAACP, and offer this as a kind of olive branch to black Americans. But then a big, bad broadcaster opposed this overture — this overture that was clearly a (rare) sign of an effort to combat at least a small bit of a monster called polarization that had taken hold of a country called the United States. And since this broadcaster had so many loyal listeners who would immediately adjust their very thinking to whatever he said, his opposition could be expected to make things more difficult to officially ease these longstanding tensions.

Who is this broadcaster seemingly standing in the schoolhouse door as the GOP leadership attempts to enter and start a dialogue with black Americans? Rush Limbaugh, of course:
Nationally syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh blasted Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman Ken Mehlman's plans to apologize for his party's notorious Southern Strategy at the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Responding to Mehlman's planned renunciation of the race-based electoral strategy, Limbaugh accused Republicans of planning "to go bend over and grab the ankles."

Though President Bush has refused to speak to the NAACP throughout his presidency, Mehlman's July 14 speech to the NAACP renounced Republican efforts to capitalize politically on white Southerners' backlash against civil rights-era legislation. In his prepared remarks, Mehlman said, "Some Republicans gave up on winning the African-American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization. I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong."

In discussing the topic, Limbaugh — whom Bush described as a "good friend" in an August 2004 appearance on Limbaugh's show — referred repeatedly to the group as the "NAALCP," which he has explained stands for the "National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People."
It's truly sad what has happened to Rush Limbaugh over the years.

He became a national smash hit when the first President Bush was on the scene. Limbaugh had screechingly funny song satires, a playful joy for the outrageous and the un-PC and unmatched broadcast sarcastic political schtick. No, he didn't blast both sides, but there was no one like him on the radio. And he blasted the first President Bush — until Mr. Bush was smart enough to invite Limbaugh to sleep over in the Lincoln bedroom. This (former) listener and others noted the BIG change in his show after that.

Suddenly, Rush became Mr. GOP Establishment Talking Points — the most powerful GOP operative in the country and very much aware of his vital status. His power seemingly increased with each GOP issue and electoral victory, solidifying his status as one of the most powerful (and in terms of broadcast ability talented) broadcasters in American history.

But for many who are NOT partisans — and even to some partisans, from what these GOPers tell us — he is now unlistenable due to his predictability. He needs a new schtick.

Hopefully this isn't it. Forgetting for a moment who'd politically benefit, anything the GOP could do to defuse even a tiny part of the cancer called polarization infecting this country is laudable. And while it is 100 percent within Limbaugh's right to urge the GOP bigwigs who bow down to and woo him not to conceed anything to the NAACP at all, in terms of NATIONAL political interest Limbaugh's comments don't do any more than again illustrate that he isn't the wave of the radio or political future.

It's all a pity because the original Rush Limbaugh — hated then by liberals as he is hated now — did do often unpredictable satire and didn't take himself too seriously. The old Rush would probably make a joke out of the GOP's peace feeler, using irony. Perhaps this inability to chill out and look at the bigger picture is why Limbaugh's ratings, though still still MEGA, reportedly aren't trending well as well as in the past. And he is clearly no longer considered the talker on the ascent.

rush is off the reservation on this and if he
is having medical problems or pain he needs to
take some time off ..it seems he messes when
he doesn't think to clearly.(most of time) ;)

You would have to ask the liberals like ASLANSPAL, PA, as to why the liberals are so concerned about what Rush says.

I care about what Rush says because he saves me a lot of time and effort. He researches the subjects and then tells us Dittoheads what we should think and say about them. Then I can come on this board and repeat it. It's a very efficient system.

No, KJ, as there is no Rush Limbaugh of the Left who has 20,000,000 listeners to his radio talk show every week. [IMG]

    We are the Rush,

Drop all your defenses and surrender,

    Resistance is futile,

    You will be assimilated.

What is really funny is that this is what the liberals really think about us...a bunch of mind numbed Rush bots who have no brains. I am thinking this ignorant, elitist attitude is part of the reason they keep losing. I am all for Liberal elitism. Please keep it up. [IMG] :D

"He researches the subjects"...lol that is the
funniest thing I have ever heard on this board

of course you know he is an entertainer but now
he has become a mean one...
as for the liberal moniker KenH ..you are liberal
as well on issues and I am as well ..such as
the environment and saving seals and such so by
all means the beam thing...I am independent
have always been such and I take discernment on
each issue seriously ..so use your labels to try
and destroy the messenger it does not work with
    me.

Of course he has an entertaining show. If he didn't then he wouldn't have 20,000,000 listeners every week.

Rush can be rough but I wouldn't call him mean. Now Sean Hannity I would say at times is mean.

I disagree about Sean. Now Michael Savage, on the other hand, is rough as it gets. But, I kinda figure that is just his Bronx upbringing in him.

I wish I could listen to Savage more often than about 40 minutes a week on Tuesdays on my way back from agility class in north Louisiana.

If he has an entertaining show what are you people listening to it for? I'm being condemned in another thread as a friend of the world and an enemy of God because I like sports as entertainment. Entertainment is evil, vile, wretched and sinful. At least, that is the position my condemner takes.
