    Yes, I said Linux.

After much searching and exasperation, i was finally able to piece together the how's and why's of downloading and burning a CD of Knoppix Linux. And I am running right now, using the Konqueror web browser.

What is Knoppix? Check the link in the thread regarding one question about linux. It was posted by Ben W. Anyway, Knoppix is a small, bootable version of Linux. The entire operating system (OS) fits on a CD, and you boot from that CD. That way, I am able to run Knoppix Linux and not disturb my Windows or my hard drive, nor do I have to install it.

Why, do you ask? Just because. Unless you have been there, you cannot say that you have gone. If I plan on returning to college to study computer technology, I need to expose myself to that technology, kapish? Plus, I always wanted to see what the hullabaloo was all about. It ain't bad...even if it is low-res.

    Thanks for the link, Ben!

    In Christ,
    Trotter

Does anyone know of any online tutorials for Linux (any strain)? I realize that Knoppix is rather basic, and, since it is running off of a CD rather than a hard drive, it is rather slow, but it is a first step. I just need to learn more.

Just another inch closer to freedom from Gates, Inc.

I've slid by there once or twice. I haven't dug deep, but some of the articles were very interesting.

Freedom from gates is always great!!
I took the Mac route because of the superior software (apps) but for more basic stuff, Linux is a great choice, I used to have SuSe installed on my HP and for the most part it was great. I may try to instal it again some time.

I use Sun's Java Desktop System which is based on SuSE, comes pre-bundled with Star Office, Gnome, Evolution mail client, etc. Pretty clean install, still working on my wireless nic card, there are no working Linux drivers for it, but I think I have cobbled something together that might work.

I Only use Linux and Solaris at Work, I have a Solaris 10 Workstation at home, and my laptop is the only place I am not completely Gates free, and that may change soon, as it is, I am triple booting it to Solaris and JDS, along with 2000 Professional.

With what I am learning about Linux, I am beginning to think that it just might actually be able to compare with Windows in the near future. The only real drawbacks I see right now is the lack of software available (without having to make it yourself), and lack of hardware support.

I did find a pretty good sight, however. It is a forum, but on computers. Many who post are looking for help, but there are many who know computers inside and out. There is a forum on Linux, as well.

Anyone use a full install of Linux? I don't care which one, but I want to pick your brain (heh-heh-heh)...

    Another question:

Where can I find a good firewall for Linux, any flavor? I don't know if there even exists any anti-virus or anti-spyware for it, but I know firewalls are available.

    El_Guero,

Thus far, yes. And I haven't really messed with it much.

I am going to have to decide on which flavor to install on our old computer after we get our daughter one of her own. And, since it is such a dinosaur (233MHz CPU, 32MB RAM, 4.3 HDD), I'm not sure which one would work on it.

I realize that there are probably over 100 different distros of Linux by now, and I really don't know a lot about them. But I am learning. I have begun frequenting www.tech-forums.net and am learning quite a bit.

What I like about ANY version of Linux is the GNU operating license which requires them to supply everything they sell on their website as a free download. I simply download my own iso disk images and make my own installation disks.

One of my favorite installation Linux versions is Red Hat. I also use a disk bootable version, but it isn't the same brand, I can't remember its name. The only problem with CD bootable is the time required to load it and the lack of disk and memory space. Try to find an older machine, buy a 60 gig drive on ebay and load it up with nothing but Linux. That is what I would suggest.

Yeah, that's sort of what I want to do. But I'll probably put the hard drive in as a second drive, and make it a dual boot system.
