Looking to Daytona

    Now that the Super Bowl is over, we can look forward to something even bigger. That's right, the Daytona 500. And, while I continue to have reservations about the direction that Nascar is going, I'm always excited about the 500.

    To get us off on the right foot, here are the Top 10 Reasons why the Daytona 500 is better than the Super Bowl.

    10. Football fans are forced to wait all season for the Super Bowl. The Nascar season starts with the Daytona 500.

    9. Daytona 500 has never had a wardrobe malfunction.

    8. Remember the big riot when Dale Earnhardt won the Daytona 500? Yeah, I don't either.

    7. Burnouts in the grass are cooler than spiking a football in the grass.

    6. Nascar: The Ultimate Contact Sport

    5. Pit stops more fun to watch than water breaks.

    4. Nascar's ever-changing rulebook offers an added layer of suspense to the race.

    3. Taking the checkered flag is a better ending than running out the clock.

    2. No one watches the Daytona 500 "for the commercials".

    1. There's no such thing as halftime in a Nascar race.

    12 days and counting! We get a little teaser Saturday night in the Shootout. #2 above is definitely true. Too bad the races aren't commercial free because there are no timeouts!

    This is my favorite one!

    I am definitely ready for the 500.

    Hoping for a great season for Stewart and Dale Jr.

    Hoping for a bad season for Gordon, Johnson and the Busch Brothers.

    I would also like to see Kahne and Carl Edwards have good years.

    I was just browsing around NASCAR.com and noticed that Mark Martin is driving the 01 car this year, now that is going to be strange.

    My favorite driver, Dale Jarrett, bolted for Toyota after they offered a hefty check to him. Can't say that I blame him, his equipment was suffering in the 88 car. I guess I'll still root for him, but I read that Ricky Rudd is going to be in the 88 this year. I've always been a fan of his, so it's good to see him back.

    What's up with the New NASCAR.com? I appreciate technology as much as the next guy but it struck me like they had 50 things going on at the same time and that little blond over in the right hand corner yakking all the time....

    I went back to jayski.com for the news.

    I never go to Nascar.com. Jayski is the best source of Nascar news there is.

    I'm looking forward to Daytona.

    I too get most of my news about NASCAR from Jayski.com. I occasionally go to NaSCAR.com, but not daily.

    The question for Daytona is, will Toyota win a race during speedweeks this year? They WILL NOT win the Daytona 500, but will they even win a race during speedweeks? What say you!?!

    I say they will not win a race at Daytona this year.

    BTW, NCSUGrad, I like your flag. I was glad to see the Sidney Lowe-coached Wolfpack put a whipping on the Tarheels earlier this week.

    What do you all think of Dale Jr. wanting 100% control of DEI? Do you think Teresa will let him have it?

    I think Jr. is saying that the problem with DEI is the one who controls it, Teresa. I think I agree with him. Everything rises and falls on leadership, and DEI just hasn't gotten it done consistently ever since 2/18/2001. I think Teresa will give up control to him. She can't afford not to. I think it was Tony Stewart who said, "Without Dale Earnhardt Jr., DEI is a museum". He's absolutely right.

    I don't know how DEI will do with Dale Jr. calling the shots, but if he thinks he's ready to run the company, I think she ought to give up control of DEI to him. And, if it's anything like how he runs Chance II, I think DEI will do better under Dale Jr. than they have under Teresa.

    I agree with you here. I think she had better give up control to him, or she and the company are in big trouble. I think she is in way over her head and needs to let someone else run the show. I think Dale Sr. wanted Jr. to get the company and would want him running it now.

    I did not like the comments I read from her that said Dale Jr. needed to decide whether he was a race car driver or a public personality. He is both, just as Dale Sr. was. Many of the drivers are both and that is just the way it is.

    Should make for an interesting year...

    I'll be shocked if Theresa gives up majority control to Jr. He may get it in the future, but not immediately. If a compromise is reached it will be based upon the promise of future ownership for Jr. If Jr. cannot live with that he will probably be better off going and driving for someone else.

    Theresa Earnhardt is a very savvy business woman. She was very involved in Earnardt's Sr. business dealings and helped make him a business success. She will not give up control and, if Jr. leaves, the company will not collapse. IMHO.

    While she may be a savvy business woman. She has been able to do this with Dale Sr. and Dale Jr's personality and popularity. If there is no one like that in the company, it will collaspe IMO.

    I don't perceive Jr. as a guy who is ready to own and run a multi-car team and wear as many hats as he will have to wear to be successful. Think of the most successful owners in NASCAR and the breadth of experience that they have in the business world: Roger Penske, Ray Evernham, Jack Roush, Rober Yates, Richard Childress, Rick Hendrick, etc. Jr. is a babe in the woods in the business world compared to these guys. In time, he could be a successful owner, but I don't think he'll succeed if he gets that responsibility now.
