Loosing Your Head or Forgetting Your Helmet

    An incredible piece of legislation was signed into law in the state of PA this week. I'm not sure who gets the blame (or credit) since the legislature is in Republican control and the Democratic governor signed it. Motorcycle riders in PA are no longer required to wear helmets!

    A part of me is concerned that our government is now becoming careless about our safety. In an age in which the government is concerned about our every move and wants to insure that we do not hurt ourselves (banning cigarette smoking in public places, passing seatbelt laws for passenger car occupants), how did this get through? Can we not conjure up statistics to show how dangerous riding a motorcycle sans helmet will be? Perhaps I've been living north of the Mason-Dixon line too long and am beginning to like government regulation over the minutae of life.

    Then the part of me that grew up in the south comes alive! Great law! Shouldn't people be allowed to make decisions about their own safety for themselves? If people want to ride a motorcycle without a helmet, let them! It's their life (even as it passes before their eyes). Is the government some baby-sitter to tell us every move to make? Repeal those seat-belt laws next! I'm tired of wrinkled shirts from the shoulder strap! I hope this is the start of a trend.

    I can see it both ways, you see. I'm not sure what to make of this new law. What do you think?

    I hold a motorcycle license, and would never even think of riding without a helmet. There are others, however, that believe nothing bad will ever happen to them. They ride with no helmet, shorts, tank top, and flip flops.

    I am worried about the cost to the nation of those who don't wear helmets. I've read about the staggering cost of health care from smokers.

    However, other than that, if they're dumb enough to ride without a helmet, I just hope they are organ donors. I subscribe to a new word of the day and one of the words this week that has entered our vernacular is "donorcycle," which is what ER doctors supposedly call motorcycles.

    In the emergency room where a relative of mine used to work, there was a poster that said, "Give your son a donorcycle for his last birthday!"

    Sorry, but I must descent here. Laws upon laws by those who know what is best for us is not good. Terrorist can kill you, they can destroy property, but the greatest (only, really) threat to a persons' liberty and freedom has been, and is, government. We are like the frog in the pan of water on the stove with the flame on low. He doesn't jump out because the slow rise in temperature doesn't bother him until it's too late. They are slowly "cooking" our freedoms folks! This may seem strange coming from a consevative. Well, I just don't think giving government more and more say in our lives is a conservative stance. Now, riding without a helmit can certainly be said to be dumb; but let's give people the right to be dumb. As far as health costs, I do feel they should have to pay suitable insurance premiums.

    I agree Watchman. In Illinois, there is no helmet law (mostly due to the lobbying of A.B.A.T.E.).

    I don't think it's wise to ride without a helmet (I wear one when I ride my bicycle), but I don't believe it's the government's job to tell us we HAVE to wear one.

    I don't like seatbelts. Before it became a law, I always wore one for safety when I was on the highway. I did not wear one in town because I can get from one end of my town to the other in 10 minutes and that's driving slow. Now, when I run to the grocery store...three blocks away...I will get a ticket if I don't have my seatbelt on. It takes less time to just walk!

    Big Brother needs to remove themselves from our private lives. They are not giving us much credit for having common sense.
