Lord Supper

I have a question for all you salty (Navy term, meaning you have been around) pastors.

Since I am not serving as pastor anywhere right now I have been visiting area churches looking for a place to heal from recent battles. I went to the church where I grew up as a young person and it was Communion time. Anyway, this pastor did something I have never witnessed before. Instead of the "Baptist standard" of the pastor and deacons serving the sacraments to the congregation, he had us go to the front and get our wafer and juice go back to our seats and had the fathers (or who ever was head of the house) lead in the receiving the sacraments. No scripture before hand, we did pray after. Not saying this is right or wrong because I know this is not the place for debate, but it just did not sit right with me.

Has anyone heard of doing it this way before?

Am I just being odd for not liking this, it seemed like it lacked the reverence I feel the Lord Supper deserves.

Anyway, I just wondered if I had been stuck in my SBC rut for too long!

 

Not at all, I like to see new and inventive ways of doing things. I am far from being a traditionalist. However, I do feel like sometimes we throw the baby out with the bath water in our quest to be "current" culturally.

I feel like there are elements to the Lords Supper that are meant to cause us to be reflective. We are to reflect on our hearts, what we are doing, what it means, what Christ did for us, and I am not sure that was accomplished when I hear folks leaving the service comparing the Lords table to that of the buffet table where they walk up and serve themselves.

Again, I am not saying that this was wrong, as for me I did not really care for it but that does not make it wrong
