I disagree with gambling as do most Baptists. So, what I am wondering is how you all feel about college scholarships funded by state lottery. Would you accept one? I don't think I could. The money is gained off of other's weaknesses.

I agree with you chipsgirl. It seems like every day I hear of all the money that has been taken in for these scholarships. In most cases, it's the people with false hopes spending money they shouldn't spend on these lotto tickets. I don't see how I could receive a scholarship in good conscience like that. It's dirty money!

I'm surprised they have any money left after paying that woman from Georgia that came up here to set up the system. I heard a couple of months ago that she would be receiving over $700,000 this last fiscal year for just heading up the program. I wish I could get paid that much for sitting on my behind too!!

If people are going to be stupid and spend their money on the lottery, let them be. But I would take the scholarship in a heartbeat. Put someone's stupidity to good use.

I think the money should go for something useful but I just wouldn't feel right about accepting one of these scholarships.

In Georgia, the Hope Scholarship which is given to any student making B's and above and the State Funded Pre-K classes are all funded by the Lottery.

That's like what we have here in TN. I think it was modeled after GA's program.

Gov. Bredesen (Boooo) just announced in his State of the State Address that he wanted to start the Pre-K program also (like Diane mentioned above).

To me, it just gives people an excuse to gamble. They think they are doing something good. Why do people have to be bribed to do good things? I remember when I would have trouble getting the girls in my sorority to do volunteer work, I would have to bribe them. Now, that's just sad.

That's how the lottery passed in Oklahoma. It will benefit the schools   It seems that everything we do, horse racing, liquor by the drink, etc goes to benefit schools. At least that is always how they sell it to the public.

I don't see anything wrong with taking a scholarship that is funded by the lottery. Refusing a scholarship is not going to change the funding of the scholarship.

The lottery is not in place in our state yet, but we have been promised better schools, etc.

I went to school on Pell Grants. I realize the Hope Scholarships open up more chances for people to go to school. I know at the Univ. of TN, they had a problem with so many people getting Hope Scholarships that enrollment was more than they could handle. Their wasn't enough instructors so the professors had to start teaching the lower level freshman classes which cheated out the upperclassman on special classes they had expected to be able to take. TN just didn't do a good job and allowed more scholarships than there are teachers to meet the need.

Why does everybody get so upset about the lottery. All it is, is a tax on people who are real bad at math!!! Tax funded education. We do it all the time.

OH, BTW, I am opposed to lotteries, slot machines, etc. God's plan is to work for your meals, not gamble for them (2Thes 3:10).

    Thankful,

What they don't tell you about are the negative impacts of the lottery. Costs a lot more than it gains -- crime rate, welfare, etc. Its just that with a lottery, the people who pay the most, are the ones who can least afford it.

You are correct, AJ! It took at least three statewide votes to get it passed just like liquor by the drink. I don't recall exactly but it took about six times to get it passed.

I voted against the lottery...and Bredeson.

Tennessee is in a mess of money troubles, and the lottery will end up the same way. They have already scaled back who can get the scholarships, and have cut the amounts. Give it a few years, and it will be busted just like our state budget.

Will my daughter use one of the scholarships? I dunno. She's thinking of going to UNC-Ashville, so it might not matter. I do not participate in the lottery, but I'd let my daughter use the scholarship.

    In Christ,
    Trotter

I vote against gambling during every election when it comes up.

It is nothing more than a stupid tax.

It's like paying over $100 for a pair of tennis shoes.

If people are going to be stupid, others might as well benefit from their stupidity. Better Students and education than Politicians and their pet projects.

I bought a winning ticket one time. Put it in the washer in my shirt pocket and destroyed it. See, I told you it was a stupid tax!

I am against the lottery in every form and fashion, but if it is in place, I would take the scholarship and put the money to good use.

I voted against the lottery as did most folks here in the "Golden Circle" area (counties around Madison Co.) Everything we do these days seems to need funding from gambling,or liquor. When my son wanted to go to college a few years back, he couldn't get any help because he had worked the summer after he graduated and gave his money to me to help pay bills. They said he should have kept the money for school purposes (it would have been a drop in the bucket). Now, people who can least afford to gamble are the ones sending other peoples' kids to college. and it doesn't even matter if the kid's parents are millionaires. They can get scholarships if they go to school in TN.
Personally, I think it would be a good idea to use some of that money to bail out TennCare. After all, lots of the folks who gamble are on TennCare.

:( I'm sorry pastor but that money would be money gotten from ill gain and it would be wrong and strickly against the word of god. and you should be ashamed. I don't care if me and my family where in the street I would not take an offering that was in direct contradiction to the word of god.

We don't always know the source of the money that is used for schools, scholarships, tithes, gifts to missions and the church.

If one works for a Department Store, he does not have any idea where the money comes from that is spent in the store and becomes the source of his salary.

I think the important thing is that a person earns the money and is eligible for the scholarship, etc.
