Love Keeps No Record Of Wrong

“LOVE KEEPS NO RECORD OF WRONGS.”….At first glance we would all say it means exactly what it says. Really?...Firstly that isn’t even the original translation from the KJV. I always go to the King James Version as I feel it is the most accurate translation and that would be a topic in itself. The kjv says, “Thinketh No Evil.”..the next verse goes on to say, “Not Easily Provoked”.

Common sense and other verses in the bible would dictate another meaning other than what is implied by most. It would be foolish to not keep a record of wrong or else how would we know any better to not REPEAT the “failures” and “bad choices” and "bad people" in our lives? Just like Matt 7 where many misquote this verse as well…”Judge not least ye be judged”…yeah, well keep reading. There is obviously more to it, for there are many verses showing we need to judge, or how else can we discern, good from evil, right from wrong? We need to judge GODLY and RIGHTEOUSLY and with the right motive. So it is with this verse…1 Cor 13:5..”Love Thinketh No Evil”

What does it mean to not think or seek evil, to not be easily provoked? I personally think it goes much further than keeping any record of wrongs. The bible also says, “To Be Angry, But In Your Anger Do Not Sin”. So clearly having a thought, or a feeling or a memory isn’t the problem, it is what we do with that ANGER, what we do with that THOUGHT, and what we do with that FEELING or memory (ptsd) that becomes wrong, becomes sin, becomes a tool in Satan’s hand.

LOVE…true agape love will not allow it. But be assured, one must keep a record of wrong of some kind, as to not go back.

Think refers to each time that you deal with someone,if they have dione ANYTHING against you, God commands you to forgive them freely, do not use those past events to keep bringing up every time you interact with them!

Clean a clean record/account with them, if possible!

Yes I agree. We are not to throw wrongs in people faces, we are to forgive. But if one doesn't seek a right relationship with you nor are they accountable for their wrong when presented...wash off your feet and move on.

But we cannot keep from memory what was done nor should we....we should take the abuse and learn from it.

The reason that newer translations than the King James say “love keeps no record of wrongs” rather than “love thinketh no evil” is because it’s a more literal translation in modern English.

The phrase – in Greek – is “λογίζομαι οὐ κακός “. This literally means “do not to reckon, calculate, compute, impute (pass into someone else’s account) anything of a bad nature, destructive, wicked, injurious, or pernicious”.

In simpler terms, love does not keep records (like a bank account) of other people’s wrong-doings done to it. Too many times we keep track of the times others have wronged us and when they make a mistake, we like to drag up all the past problems.

There’s a progression there that I see in the Love Chapter that – if not heeded – will GET you to the point where all you see in others is their fallings, failings, and wrongdoings. Especially and unfortunately, those we claim that we love.

The progression, to me, looks like this:

"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."


If we aren’t patient, then we won’t show kindness to those who screw up. When you don’t show patience and kindness to those we claim to love, then what do we show? Jealously, arrogance, rudeness. What’s next? “It’s all about me!!!” We insist on our own way, get irritable and resentful when those we love don’t measure up and then comes the worse. We “keep score” of how many faults they have - or λογίζομαι (impute it to their account) - and we rejoice in it. And finally we have NO capacity to bear anything for those we love. Why would we? We despise them. And if we do not bear their burdens and faults, then there is no belief in the truth of how we are to treat others. No belief means no hope and no mean means no capacity for enduring ANYTHING.

I think “love keeps no record of wrongs” is a good translation. I also like the translation of Young’s Literal that says “love imputes no evil”. It means the same to me.

KJV has our manner of speech, while Nasb talks about character, Niv about loving money, which is it?

Would say the Nasb/Niv hit closer to the mark here than the Kjv, no?

I think “love keeps no record of wrongs” is a good translation. I also like the translation of Young’s Literal that says “love imputes no evil”. It means the same to me.

The OP appears to be an attempt to hallow an unforgiving attitude. Forgiveness for real and deep offenses is beyond the power of a man. It takes a work of the Holy Spirit on one's heart. So though the bitterness may be understandable, watering down the commandment to make it something attainable by the power of the flesh is a worse offense.
