Lucifer working for the Vatican

There is another thread on this forum where the name Lucifer is noticed in an Easter Vigil prayer called the Exsultet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exsultet

And of course that topic gets a lot of discussion on that thread.

But there is yet another more modern connection. The Vatican has an astronomy group/dept/ that is essentially run by Jesuits (apparently they are considered the intelligentsia in the Catholic Church).

They have two observatories. One old observatory outside of the Vatican city - (apparently it used to be fairly dark there).

The other in Arizona. The one in Arizona is an optical binocular named L.U.C.I.F.E.R by the manufacturer.

LUCIFER - two multi-object and longslit infrared spectrographs plus imagers. The imager has 2 cameras and can observe at both seeing limited and diffraction limited with adaptive optics.

One in Arizona is run by the Vatican.

The Vatican Observatory Research Group operates the 1.8m Alice P. Lennon Telescope with its Thomas J. Bannan Astrophysics Facility, known together as the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT). This is located at the Mount Graham International Observatory (MGIO) in southeastern Arizona.

Here is an interesting article
Those objects can be detected with the help of LUCIFER – a beastly set of super-cooled, near-infrared cameras also known as Large Binocular Telescope Near-infrared Utility with Camera and Integral Field Unit for Extragalactic Research.

The first camera, LUCIFER I, was fitted to the telescope in 2010. According to some reports, LUCIFER II is set to be installed as early as this year.
But why did scientists choose the widely known moniker for Satan when naming the instruments?

And what is the Vatican’s widely rumored involvement with LUCIFER?

So why did the manufacturer decide to name the instrument "Lucifer"?

The lead institution for the construction of the LUCIFER spectrographs is the Observatory of the German State of Baden-Württemberg, which is now part of Heidelberg University, he explained. When a German partnership was formed to join Arizona’s Large Binocular Telescope project, funding became problematic. At that point, then-Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Erwin Teufel stepped in and ensured state funding was available.
“Now, as it happens, the name of this governor is Teufel, which is the German word for ‘devil,‘” Quirrenbach explained. “Again, absolutely no offense to anyone; this is a fairly common name in Germany.

So to those familiar with the local state politics in Southwest Germany, it is plainly obvious that the two Lucifer instruments are named in honor of Teufel, who helped the state observatory become a member of the LBT.”
He added, “It’s as simple (or complicated, as you will) as that. Nobody thought of the possibility that anybody could take offense at the name ‘Lucifer.

Interesting? Coincidence? Providence?

Those pesky Jesuits hiding closets, and under the bed. Gotta watch out for them!

I don't know anything about the telescope or instrument. But you are right the Vatican does indeed run an observatory at the Vatican and also jointly works at an observatory in Arizona. There is a section devoted to science. And in fact the Big Bang theory was first postulated by a Jesuit. Which in Catholic view God created the universe Ex Nihilio which means out of nothing. So the Jesuit based on that belief postulated the big bang theory which moved against an accepted view at the time called the Steady State Theory which held the universe was always there. However, because at the basis of the big bang theory there must have been a God which caused it Hawkins recently gave a seminar trying to explain how the big bang happened without God using M theory as his base (string theory) Again trying to move science back from the view of the Universe being created Ex Nihilio to always having been there in some form as "string membranes" from multi-verses occasionally collide.

Good point. In fact the "Big Bang" was a derogatory term that scientists supporting the steady-state alternative used to intimidate the scientists that thought all matter had a beginning. They were trying to hint that the alternative to steady-state was Genesis 1:1 and that no self-respecting scientist should want to affirm something in the Bible.

However that aside - their telescopes are in fact LUCIFER 1 and LUCIFER 2 in case of Arizona.
