    Hello Everyone
My new mac mini (Tiger) with OSX has problems suddenly. We already have a mac mini (OS is Panther) , a computer my teenage son uses.
My mac mini won't connect suddenly. I went into network and there is no internet connection software, it just disappeared. There is no network. An internet connect icon which I don't believe I use since we have high speed is missing from the desktop. There is no network software and my son says it is not on the mac mini install disk. That doesn't seem to make sense.
I believe I need the software or something.
Being used to windows, I tried to search my mac mini install disk for the software but it wouldn't work. OR I didn't do it right, I am used to Windows. I can reformat and reload with the install disk but I want to keep all of my itunes songs.
Does anyone know where to find the internet connection software, or what key words to use to search online for it? I can go to the mac website but I don't know key words to find what I need.
I assume what I need is is on my install disk but I can't get it. Thanks so much for any advice.

    Joe

go to system preferences by hitting your apple menu. Then the system preferences application will load.
You should see a network icon.
    Click that.
You should then see your network status.
You should at least see built in ehternet.
If you have wireless, you will also see "Airport"
If you are plugged in, should see a a green or yellow "light" next to the built in ethernet.
A green light means you have internet access, a yellow light means you are connected with the cable but do not have a proper IP address. A red light means you are not connected at all.

Note that if you have a router in your house like a linksys or something like that, you may get the green light even if you can't connect.

Do this and let me know what you see.

If still nothing works, restart the computer and as the computer first comes on, hold down the command key (has the apple on it) plus the option (alt) key plus "P" and R"
hold down until you hear the startup chime a second time.
If you have a windows keyboard, hit the windows and alt keys, these are the command and option keys.

IF you still need help, give me your phone number and I should be able to have you up and running in a few minute.
Just send me a private message or email me at dalecosby at gmail dot com

BTW, I should add, if your network software, which is part of the operating system is corrupted, it should be self healing. but we can get to that after you show me what that network window says.

    Thanks Dale

Got an error message which says the network settings have been changed by another application. The router works fine, I am using it to type online to you using my sons computer. The green light came on, and it says built in ethernet connection in system precerences. I have high speed cable internet. I am holding for tech support, soemthing I should have thought of in the beginning. I think they can give me the settings which I type in and it will work. I'll let you know. Thanks for your help so far and offering your phone number. Appreciate your help very much
I'll get back to you shortly

It works!!!! The recording at tech support said to unplug the modum (i thought it was a router at first but it's a modum) and unplug the computer for one minute. I followed it and it fixed itself!

Thanks again Dale for replying. Have a great evening:wavey:

Aren,t Macs just great! One thing that took me time to learn when I switched was that if there is a problem, chances are there is a very simple solution.

Unplugging a PC is not hard.

Neither is throwing it out a window.

But I'm not a Mac user.

Nice to know Mac's are easy when there's a problem. It happened again today, but it fixed itself when I unplugged the two devices. We'll see....

Sounds like your Mac is fine and your modem is bad. I had that problem once a while back. Nothing wrong with the computer and you would have the same problem, Mac or PC.

Wait, you would have that one problem with the Mac and that one problem plus many more with the pc :)

    Internet Problem

Don't be so quick to blame the Mac, this problem sounds really familiar to the same one that my mom has. She is a dedicated PC user and has not trusted Mac for her computer salvation. Hers is actually a network problem when one or more computers are connected. I think that we finally figured out that it was the router and not her computer. So if it keeps up, it may be your router and you should try another brand or style.

Modems and routers need to ocassionally rebooted. While mine works fine for a long while, I have learned that when my internet connection gets sluggish, it is the first thing I do.

Unplug all the wires to both and let them sit for a minute or so. Plug the power to the modem and let it stabalize, then in incoming, stabalize, then the outgoing. Same procedure with the router.

Clears up 95% of any problems.
