I've been trying to witness to about 5 atheists on another board. They keep bringing up the fact that Jesus used cannibus and give links supporting it. When I read the links it says that the annointing oils probably contained the herb and it is easily absorbed through the skin. They attribute this to how Jesus and the deciples healed people. Another link was a bit more shady saying that is why Jesus saw visions from God as did the prophets.

So i tried showing them how marijuana is bad to smoke (because most of them do). They all defended it strongly, and even some of the christians supporting me were in favor of and did it smoke too. So I'm a lone voice in the midst of the wolves.

What are your views on smoking it? Same as alcohol since it is similar? I need some more material to show why it is so bad.

There are worse things you could do.

    [qb]
Smoking anything releases carcinogens into the lungs.

A word of advice: They're trying to get you off the subject. If you're talking to them about Jesus, then talk to them about Jesus.

Don't worry about the pot argument. That will all fall into place soon enough.

Just stick to Jesus for now.

    Hello Jason1

I agree with Mike’s post on staying on the subject of Jesus. However, we are many times told to stay sober, self controlled, vigilant, etc…, one cannot do that and be high on drugs like marijuana or alcohol.

We cannot gird up the loins of our mind if we are high on marijuana or alcohol.
1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober,

We cannot be vigilant if we are high on marijuana or alcohol. 1 Peter 5:8, Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

There are several other references on the subject, I just grabbed a couple that came to mind.

I am not in favour of people using marijuana, However the exception to the rule would be for pain relief in a terminally ill patient. Heroin is used as a painkiller, as are many mis used drugs.

As far as Jesus having used it, they will need to supply you with a reference from the Bible stating it is so.

Remember Jesus was offered drugs on the Cross, a sponge with some stuff soaked onto it and He refused it.

I don't think Jesus smoked anything, because as far as I know, the Jews weren't big on smoking.

But just because something was acceptible then in a cultural setting, that doesn't mean it's acceptible now, even if Jesus did it. For example, when Jesus was twelve, he departed from his parents and went to the Temple. In the day when one was an adult was 14, that might not be sinful. But for our children to wander off across town, even if it's to go to church, without our consent, is sinful. So even if Jesus did smoke marijuana, it's no less sinful for us to do the same (medical requirements excepted).

I've seen this recently, but I don't think any marijuana was in the oils used for annointing.
    Check this out...from Exodus 30

22 Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,
24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:
25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.

Thx curtis. That info is great! Never even knew the ingredient list was in the bible.

It's hard to stay just on Jesus once they bring that up. Then they all seem they have to justify why marijuana isn't bad. So I'll try to steer the discussion back to the focal point soon.

I'd say it's irrelevant to the discussion. If they continually bring it up as their reason for rejecting Christ, I wouldn't bother with the pot discussion. The fact that they would have to come up with a reason (other than "I don't believe") pretty much implies that they do believe, and just don't want to be bound to Christian principles. As reasons for rejecting Christ go, that's pretty weak.

That's what gets me -- many atheists I speak to give me all sorts of emotional reasons, or they'll point to some things they just can't wrap their logical minds around (which is fine, we all have trouble with that sometimes), but the fact that someone would have to ask a question like, "Why should I believe in God when there's all this siffering?" implies to me that they want to believe, they just can't bring themselves to lose their pride.

Most of the people I witness to either bring up evolution or what you said, why does bad things happen to good people.

I tell them the answers as best I can, but they do seem to be hard headed and set in their ways. I think it is because of fear in that there could be a God and then they'd have to change and that scares them because they're comfortable in their sinful lives.

A person can justify anything. In their hearts they know better. Sometimes its best not to cast your pearls before the swine.

Jason1, your friends are using an old logical fallacy known as the Red Herring. They are trying to get you off track by pointing you elsewhere.

Tell them about Jesus, clearly and forthrightly and then pray for them.

Reading through the posts about marijuana, I notice an utter lack of scriptural support for banning the use of cannabis.

Not to single anyone out, but Jason1 said it all with this remark

The problem is that there is no evidence to support prohibiting marijuana. If there were serious problems associated with marijuana use, no one would be asking for "material to show why it is so bad."

If marijuana is SOOO BAAAD, you would see countless examples with your own eyes— no one has trouble noticing drunks but the same cannot be said for pot smokers.

If marijuana is harmful there should be bodies littering the landscape. But I never read in the paper— "marijuana overdose kills man." I never read "marijuana crazed man kills neighbors." I never see any reports of negative things about marijuana except for what the drug warriors say to justify their arrests.

All of the reasons given for outlawing marijuana were barefaced lies.

The lies used to outlaw marijuana are so ridiculous that the proper response to the term "marijuana crime" would be gales of hilarious laughter aimed at the DEA and any other proponents of marijuana prohibition, except for the fact that putting people in jail for "Reefer Madness" is no joke.

There was never any good reason to outlaw marijuana in 1937 and there is no good reason now.

Beyond this there is no scriptural commandment to abstain from marijuana or any other drug plant. There is no authority to punish drug users in the Bible!

Although there is no Biblical ban on drug use there are severe warnings about lying

    1 Cor 3:16-19

16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
    KJV

If your body is the "Temple of God", should we not abstain from things such as marijuana and alcohol? If marijuana is used as a painkiller, is this not mind-altering? Sorry, but I don't believe in legalizing this stuff. Rick Sr.

2 Peter 3:15-16. "...and account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which those who are untaught and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures."

Let's all be careful HOW WE use Scripture!!

Prohibitionists take the scriptures above to mean that Christians should abstain from alcohol altogether. They confuse the meaning of the words like sober and temperate and put everything in the context of alcohol intoxication.

The prohibitionist's first error is the false assumption that the early Christians were teetotalers. They fail to recognize the obvious contradiction to prohibition in scriptures advising moderation and temperance, but not abstinence. No where does the Bible say that believers should never consume wine and other alcoholic drinks. Instead warnings are given about the dangers of booze and moderation is recommended.

[miracle at Cana — water to wine]
John 2:3 When the wine ran short the mother of Jesus said to him: "They have no wine." 4 But Jesus said to her: "what have I to do with you, woman? My hour has not yet come." 5 His mother said to those ministering: "Whatever he tells you, do." 6 As it was, there were six stone water jars sitting there as required by the purifications rules of the Jews, each able to hold two or three liquid measures. 7 Jesus said to them: "fill the water jars with water." And they filled them to the brim. 8 And he said to them: "Draw some out and take it to the director of the feast." So they took it. 9 when, now, the director of the feast tasted the water that had been turned into wine but did not know what its source was, although those ministering who had drawn the water knew, the director of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him: "Every other man puts out the fine wine first, and when people are intoxicated, the inferior. You have reserved the fine wine until now." 11 Jesus performed this in Cana of Galilee as [the] beginning of his signs, and he made his glory manifest; and his disciples put their faith in him.

    *************************

    [the last supper]
Matthew 26:27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."

    *************************

Christians should understand that instructions to be temperate and sober-minded mean more than just watching their alcohol intake. Being sober-minded means not being deceived by satanic fables, fictions and false witness. Being sober-minded means following sound doctrine that can be backed up by the Bible, not some prohibitionist delusion.

One purpose of maintaining temperate alcohol intake is to avoid being deceived by false doctrines.

Christians are not supposed to be naive simple–minded oafs who can be deceived by outrageous claims made up by inveterate liars. Particularly when the policy of drug prohibition insults the Creator and violates many rules of Godly conduct.

How sober–minded is it to be seduced by a lie based drug prohibition scheme that comes straight out of the Devil's mind.

Think about it have you ever heard of a fratricide because somebody smoked a joint? That's what the drug warriors told Congress to get marijuana outlawed—

The "sons of light and sons of the day" are not supposed to be fools hoodwinked by forces of "the night or of darkness."

The fundamental notion that prohibition is based on contradicts Bible teaching—

The idea that a man is corrupted by consuming a drug runs against Jesus's words at:

Drug prohibition is a false doctrine similar to the inquisitions and witch hunts of the past.

If anyone disagrees please show us the scriptural support for your position.

Reasons for Chrisitians NOT to use marijuana:

    1. It is ILLEGAL. To do something that is ILLEGAL is wrong. Not only is it ILLEGAL, it can get you into serious trouble with the law. It will get your name in the paper. "Billy Graham arrested for selling marijuana to local college students" would NOT be a good witness. We are urged to stay away from anything that is illegal.

    2. It is offensive to the majority of Bible believing Christians. This corresponds closely to the principle of "flesh offered to idols."

Let's just imagine that there is NOTHING wrong with smoking marijuana. You should be the stronger Christian in this case and seek to not offend the easily offended brother, which in this case would make up the majority of Christians. It's in the Bible.

    3. It is (like soda, sugar, cholesterol, alchohol) not good for your body. Over the long term it raises estrogen levels in men and women, kills the scilia in the lungs, and creates a risk for cysts and cancerous growths. Bob Marley may be the most extreme example.

That's all I have time for now. The family is ready to go grocery shopping.

Very good JohHenry. That's how I feel also. We are to be examples and witnesses of God. Being a model citizen enforces that notion.
