Mark of the beast

While some contend that the mark of the beast is non-literal or spiritual, meaning a mental allegiance (forehead mark) or physical action devotion (hand mark), this seems unlikely to me, since you need the mark to buy and sell. This economic aspect points to a bar code, chip, implant, RFID tattoo, or similar technological function.

The "mark of the beast" (Revelation 13:16-18) is frequently associated in modern prophetic interpretation with emerging technologies that facilitate a cashless society, centralized world government, and biometric tracking, coordinated by AI in a global central surveillance and control system. This mark would be more expedient than asking multiple questions or conducting a complex background check.

While traditional interpretations vary, contemporary concerns often link the prophecy to technologies that could theoretically be required for all financial transactions.

The mark of the beast is an allusion either to the custom among the Romans of imprinting marks upon their servants and soldiers, by which they might be known to whom they belonged; servants had them in their foreheads, and soldiers in their hands; or to the usages of the Jews in binding their phylacteries upon their arms and foreheads, to put them in mind of the law of God, and their obedience to it; or to the practices of the Heathens, in putting the mark of the god they worshipped upon their bodies.

Maimonides says it was a custom with the Gentiles to mark themselves with their idols, showing that they were their bought servants, and were marked for their service.

The sense is, that some received the mark in one place, and some in another: those who were obliged to receive the mark in the right hand seem to be the clergy, such who entered into holy orders; who lifted up their right hand, and swore and vowed allegiance to the pope, and testified they were ready to defend and support his religion and interest; and who in their ordination are said to have an indelible character impressed on them: and those who received the mark in their foreheads are the common people in general, who one and all have the same impress upon them.

Seventh Day Adventists interpret the mark of the beast as having something to do with holding church services on Sunday.

We do not actually believe that Sunday keeping per se identifies the mark of the beast (though unfortunately some Adventists do not properly grasp this point). The mark entails much more than this alone, and is restricted to a short period of time immediately before the Second Coming. For us, current Sunday keeping is only a man-made tradition. It will eschatologically become part of the “mark” but not until the fuller events portrayed in Revelation materialize

The mark of the beast will enable people to buy and sell. The personal identification number could be a separate, additional component for paying or receiving payment.

When things are mentioned in the Bible that are common in life, like seeds, mountains, trees, kings, houses, water, bread, etc., we are not confined to only biblical references to understand them. Marks on the forehead and hand were familiar to the believers who read the book of Revelation.

A literal, physical mark on forehead or hand was common and would have been the context for early Christians who lived under Roman rule.

In the Roman Empire, physical marks on bodies were primarily used to identify and control social status, particularly for slaves, criminals, and soldiers. Common markings included, but were not limited to, tattoos on the forehead of runaway slaves ("FUG" for fugitivus) and tattoos on the hands or arms of soldiers.

Thus, the mark of the beast physically and visibly signifies a slave of the one world system of the anti-Christ.

That mark is reminiscent of an event described in the third book of Maccabees, from the third century B.C.E. In 3 Maccabees 2:28-29 it says that the Jews of Alexandria were forced to join in the worship of the god Dionysus.

The participants had a mark burned on their body; that might have been the forehead or the right hand, because they were clearly visible.

It was said that we should compare scripture with scripture, regarding the nature of the mark of the beast. It was stated that in scripture, forehead was symbolic of mentality or loyalty, and hand signified actions. This is not always true. Often the words for body parts are meant literally.

As far as the word “mark” is concerned, it often means a literal, tangible, physical sign, which in the time that the mark of the beast will exist, could very well be a microchip, implants, or RFID tattoo, which might be managed by a global AI surveillance and universal management system.

The word “mark” is χάραγμα, G5916, an inscription engraved physically.

The Book of Revelation several times refers to the “mark of the beast” which the Antichrist will require of all people during his reign of terror in the tribulation period (Rev 14:9, 11; 16:2; 20:4). This will be a sign of submission to him.

In the Old Testament, the word translated as “mark” is:

קַֽעֲקַ֔ע, an incision, imprintment, tattoo. The Israelites were forbidden to tattoo any marks upon their body, a common practice among the heathen around them (Lev 19:28).

תָּ֜ו, a mark, signature. Ezekiel was told by God to go through the city of Jerusalem and put a mark upon the foreheads of the godly who grieved over the abominations of the city (Ezek 9:4), because the wicked inhabitants would be slain.

In the New Testament:

σημει̂ον, G4956, a sign, an outward (visible) indication.

Some people think when the anti-Christ appears to the world, it will be obvious, especially when he starts demanding worship.

I doubt it. I think he will be more subtle in his initial rise to power. He likely will not draw too much attention to himself until the time is ripe.

In the beginning, I wonder if the anti-Christ will actually say “worship me”. It seems more likely that he won’t say anything at first, people will just admire and obey him because he is solving so many problems and seems so smart and invincible.

People will probably reverence and cherish him without thinking it is an act of religious devotion. They will just trust him completely, without questioning. At least it will start that way.

So we should be very cautious about getting swept away by any leader in any realm of life. We need to exercise scrutiny and not applaud everything someone says and does.

Independent thinking is crucial, but it seems to be decreasing. People line up with an ideology, support the whole program, and oppose all who disagree or challenge it.

My question on the Mark of the Beast is:
And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead,
— Revelation 13:16
And
Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.
— Revelation 14:9-10
If the Mark is physical, it seems to imply that the beast could force people to go to hell by holding people down/force and giving them the mark.

Im no expert on eschatology, so Im sure there are those smarter than I that have thought about this more deeply than myself.

All people who refuse to worship the Beast are killed.

Those who worshiped the Beast are forced to be stamped with its mark.

Revelation 13

14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.

15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed.

16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,

17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.

Yeah, but Satanic purpose is twisted. Why kill someone when they could send someone to hell with them instead by putting a mark on their hand without consent?

Or do you think it will be like the Covid shots; that Satanic forces would only do the mark if it was consensual?

It could be that those who insist on the mark of the beast on hand or forehead being merely symbolic, instead of literal, are simply reluctant to pass up a technology that seems to be providing convenience. Buying and selling being streamlined sounds like a good idea to them. They’re getting tired of fumbling around with plastic cards and cell phone apps at the store.

They like the idea of paying or receiving payment by just scanning a microchip, implant, bar code, or RFID tattoo on their body. So they claim that forehead means mental allegiance to the anti-Christ and hand means actions in alignment with the global beast system.

This interpretation relieves them of the need to be cautious about emerging biometric identification, centralized surveillance, and financial transaction technology.

They may also want to avoid being different from their friends and family. If everybody’s doing it, they dread being the oddball non-conformist misfit. When their peers are moving swiftly and easily through checkouts, they don’t want to be lagging behind due to using old fashioned forms of financial transactions.

So, if they need to be marked to buy and sell in a digital cashless society, it will be okay with them.

AI and humanoid robotics are now here to fulfill the end times prophecy about the talking statue of the beast.

Pagan idols often were large statues, but could not move or talk.

As people today begin to rely on AI to provide accurate information and even emotional support, when AGI (artificial general intelligence that is smarter than all humanity combined) arrives, it will be seen as a godlike, infallible expert that must be trusted and obeyed by all.

The beast’s talking statue or robot could have AGI as its spirit or animating intelligence. This perfect all-knowing entity will be admired and unquestionable. It will seem to be barbaric and unscientific to rebel against its superior intellect.

It is this talking image or statue or robot of the beast that forces people to receive the mark or etching of the beast on their right hand or forehead.

Revelation 13:14-18

14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Revelation 13:15 Weymouth New Testament

And power was granted him to give breath to the statue of the Wild Beast, so that the statue of the Wild Beast could even speak and cause all who refuse to worship it to be put to death.

εἰκόνι (eikoni)

Peter Thiel has been lecturing about the anti-Christ and the mark of the beast.

QUOTE

The billionaire and co-founder of PayPal and surveillance company Palantir recently delivered a series of four lectures on behalf of ACTS 17 Collective—a nonprofit dedicated to Acknowledging Christ in Technology and Society (ACTS)—about the Antichrist.

While the rapid rise in AI and other advanced technologies has led many to believe that the Antichrist will use technology to accomplish his goals—the New York Timesopinion columnist Ross Douthat has even suggested to Thiel that the surveillance technology provided by Palantir could be a tool for the Antichrist—Thiel says in his first lecture that, "in the 21st century, the Antichrist is a Luddite who wants to stop all science."

In his second lecture, Thiel goes on to identify "the legionnaires of the Antichrist [as people] like Eliezer Yudkowsky, Nick Bostrom, and Greta Thunberg [who] argue for world government to stop science."

Thiel explains how "it's become quite difficult to hide one's money" in the wake of the Patriot Act, the "extensive" administrative state (the Treasury Department, in particular), and the centralization of payments on the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications system—an international messaging network better known as SWIFT, which banks use to process global payments.

All of these factors make it impossible to "escape from global taxation if you're a U.S. citizen," he says.

Thiel links this erosion of financial freedom to Revelation 13:16-17, which prophesies about a society where an individual's ability to engage in commerce is contingent upon brandishing the mark of the beast on one's body.

Yet, for all of his hand wringing that the Antichrist will come to power this century and bring about total destruction, Thiel refuses to prescribe a "systematic formula" to fight this figure, which might be the most libertarian aspect of his lectures. Instead, he encourages the audience "to think for [themselves] for a little bit." Thiel returns to the importance of free will in his final lecture, saying that there "are choices we have to make" to resist the rise of the Antichrist and that "it's for people here to make choices; to decide."

How close are we to the technological implementation of the mark of the beast?

Wannabe cyborgs with little RFID chips under their skin are living with us: some 50,000 individuals now have them.

Primarily available in the U.K., Switzerland, and the EU, these chips cost around $200−$300, and cannot be removed for refunds.

The first-ever human to receive an RFID microchip implant was British scientist Kevin Warwick (known by the moniker “Captain Cyborg”) in 1998.

This experiment allowed a computer to monitor Warwick as he moved through halls and offices of the Department of Cybernetics at the University of Reading, using a unique identifying signal emitted by the implanted chip. He could operate doors, lights, heaters and other computers without lifting a finger.

Approximately two decades later, the technology has been made commercially available, and tens of thousands of people decided to implant an RFID chip.

For example, groups of people have been meeting at “implant parties,” often organized by larger companies, to hook up. It’s especially popular in Sweden, where more than 4,000 individuals can take pride in opening doors by only lifting their hands.

In the future, an RFID chip implanted into your hand, between your thumb and your index finger on the back of your hand, could contain a lot of useful information – that you usually carry around in your wallet or purse.

It could transmit your identity information as you walk through a security checkpoint, enable you to use public transport, and make long lines at the supermarket checkout a thing of the past.

You wouldn’t have to worry about losing your most important documents or your wallet ever again – and ‘within hand’s reach’ will most certainly have a second layer of meaning. Moreover, imagine that in a medical emergency situation, the first responders only have to scan your hand to get to know every valuable bit of medical data about you.

While these implants are becoming popular for tasks like contactless payments, opening doors, and storing personal information, there are significant safety concerns.

The study points out that most implants are currently performed by non-medical professionals, raising the risk of infections and adverse tissue reactions.

It calls for more involvement from medical professionals, particularly hand surgeons, to develop standardized techniques for implanting these devices safely and effectively. The study underscores the need for further research to better understand the long-term implications of RFID implants in human health.
