I wouldn't worry about it....there's quite a bit of controversy about the credibility of this 'supposed' Catholic nun. If I recall correctly this wasn't even her real name and the claims she had could not be verified.

Perhaps you should write her, and ask her the questions that you have. She has left a number of links and websites, some of which she can be contacted. Is it necessary to cast aspersions at others, when you don't like what you see?

I see no reason to not be willing to say what religious order she belong if she wants to publicize that she is an ex-nun. She has no credibility if she can't substantiate her story.

I just love how these supposed former Catholics never seem to have kept a single Catholic thought in their heads. You'd expect maybe one or two areas where they still thought the Catholic teaching was the correct one, or at least still had some doubt, but no, they all seem to become 100% "Pure Protestants," without the faintest trace of their former faith, including, what else, a nasty and un-Christian (but oh so self-righteous) attitude towards the Catholic Church.

Compare and contrast that with the very common Protestant-to-Catholic convert attitude, who is very thankful for his/her Protestant past, but who had to follow the path of truth into the True Church.

Funny how those who leave the Catholic Church feel the need to revile it, while those who leave Protestantism for Catholicism rarely exhibit that behavior.

Assuming, of course, that Mary Ann "I can't answer all my email" Collins is even real...

I'm agreeing with Kathryn here. Nobody is asking for her baby pictures, social security number or telephone number.
But a bit of background, including say.. her former order would be nice.
And displaying some sort of inside knowledge about Catholicism that can't be gained from reading the standards in anti-catholic literature also wouldn't hurt.

Wake up and smell the coffee Kathryn....credibility is not a requirement when one desires to attack the Catholic Church. All one needs to do is find something online etc and use it....who cares if it's true or not, no need to verify truth....that's not what it's about.....as long as it fits their agenda then it's 'ok'.

Of course they have to tap dance around the commandments and other scripture....but I don't see that this slows them down much.

Well I must say that I recently reread an old Chick standard I used to take as gospel, and now that I both have studied more church history and denominational doctrines, and know more about valid reasoning, I can say truthfully that it's mostly full of hamster pellets. More specifically, the reasoning used is almost entirely that of propaganda techniques--circular arguments, a priori assumptions, non sequiturs, dependence on shoddy or disproven scholarship, name-calling, appeals to emotion--and also selective citations to "prove" Catholic teachings that are actually in direct opposition to what is officially taught as found in the CCC. I'm embarrassed now that I ever accepted his drivel as accurate.

One example before I go: Chick cites the teaching that "there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church" as evidence that the RCC considers all Protestants damned to hell, without ever mentioning that the RCC considers all persons baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to be Christians in a mystical union with the Body of Christ (which it identifies as the RCC). (On his website, Chick also mentions this "teaching"--it being "proved" by very selective citation of the CCC--ignoring the parts that contradict his view of what the RCC must teach.)

Funny how those who leave the Catholic Church feel the need to revile it, while those who leave Protestantism for Catholicism rarely exhibit that behavior.

What troubles me is how some from ALL faiths (Protestantism doesn't cover all non-Catholic Christian faiths by the way) can paint with such a broad brush.

I AM a former Catholic who now attends a Baptist church. So is my husband. If you review MY posts on this board, you will see that while I may debate issues with Catholics, I have a great love and respect for most. Many of my relatives are Catholic, and while I feel they could serve Christ more effectively out of the RCC, I respect the great faith they have in Christ.

To be quite honest, I have practicing Catholic friends who revile the RCC worse than some posters I see here.

I don't think that unmitigated vitriol spewed at anyone will convert a single soul. We are here to make disciples of all nations. If we have problems with one another's beliefs we should state that firmly, but without personal attack. Didn't Christ say that they would know we were Christians by our love for one another?

Broad brushes are useful for getting work done. One can always go back with a trim brush to touch up the edges. I stand by my statement as a reflection of my own experience and reading.

I certainly questioned the veracity of Mary Ann "I can't answer all of my emails" Collins, but she invited scrutiny by putting up her website. Yeah, I find that kind of funny as well. The whole point that this type of thing demonstrates of course, is that whoever's BRAND of gospel you hear that you are drawn to, then that is the one. Notice a convert to the Lutheran or Anglican church will be teaching a different 'gospel' of salvation than say a convert to the pure Evangelical ones.

Anyways, this nun sounds like a typical propagandist. Very Chickish. You cannot even find out the order she was in. You know Jack Chick says the RCC keeps a secret list of every person in every denomination the world over to do religios terrorism. Maybe we could ask the RCC for that list. I am sure she is on it right?

Although, I don't deny that there 'could' be one like here somewhere in reality. It just seems very very odd, after the deciation to God they have for so long, and study of the Bible, that they suddenly can go 180 on every single thing they have learned. That they can, on their own, cross from Catholic over hundreds of years of Protestant theolical development to arrive suddenly at the Evangelical position so quickly. Hmmm. Thats a tough sell.

Unfortunately, no, I am not grateful to the church for the teachings I learned there. In my personal experience, I found the priests I dealt with were out of touch with the common man, and were rather pompous in dealing with lay people. Individual Bible study was not encouraged, or even mentioned. Many of the lay people I came in contact with were lovely, however.

I would not call this an "observation", and by making a universal statement you have characterized me, personally as what you state above. I haven't abandoned all of the teachings of the RCC, nor am I "nasty" towards it. I don't agree with much of the teaching. Even though my limited experience with different priests was far from ideal, I know that there are many out there who are good, Godly men. This I get from the Catholic bretheren I meet in my day to day life, and from various posters on this board.

You might also take a writing course and learn what "tone" in writing is. You convey much negativity in your writing. That weakens your argument of making "observations".

Finally, I absolutely agree with your final point about this supposed "ex-nun". She should at least be willing to substantiate her arguments by proving she exists and is what she says she is. I think she also could take some lessons in "tone". We only hurt our own faith by writing publically and not showing a Christian attitude, even when we don't agree or feel the need to criticize.

Just notice that there aren't a lot of websites such as www.freedomfromprotestantism.org or www.thefalsebaptistfaith.org sponsored by Catholics. I'll be more judicious in my use of the broad brush, but you must in honesty acknowledge that there is a clear and fundamental difference in the overall tone of the two camps of converts (into and out of the Catholic faith).

I didn't come up with this observation on my own either -- it was first brought to my attention by various former Protestants who have come home to the Catholic Church. It's a common theme in their writings.

I CAN agree with you that MOST of the former Catholics I know have a bone to pick with the Church. I try not to get involved in Catholic-bashing because I see many of them as brothers and sisters in the faith. I think our Lord sees us that way as well. I'll concede the attitude issue with you on former Protestants. I'm glad that they are jumping the fence (so to speak) with loving attitudes.

There are a few Catholic posters on this board that are extremely intelligent and spiritual. I enjoy reading the different points of view and the scriptural arguments to back them up. You've given me a new area to study and understand more fully. Thanks!
