Ours flashed, the phone was out a while, but it's all back to normal now.
I don't have tv but I'm hearing bad things are going on in NY and other places. Webmaster, Barnabas please respond when you can and let us know if you're ok!

For some reason our power came back on quickly. As far as I know, no major problems yet in NYC--but power is still off there.

Thanks Tim. I can't get ahold of the person I was trying to get in contact with there, so was worried. Someone had told me those in subways were still stuck, she said something about the water. I saw where it did mention that on the internet, but not finding any updates to see where they're at now with it all.
It seems like the towns surrounding us are down. We're lucky. :D Got some people on the way over though if they don't get power restored soon. Hope they bring their own blankies!

Power just came back in Rockland County. Orange County has a state of emergency declared. NYC is still out.

It seems to have been the power grid (think Enron) rather than any major power plant.

Apparently it was a major power plant damaged by a natural(think non-Enron) cause.

"Canada Blames Power Outage on Lightning
By TOM COHEN, Associated Press Writer

TORONTO - Canadian officials blamed a massive blackout Thursday across the Northeast and parts of Canada on a lightning strike at the Niagara power plant.

"We have been informed that lightning struck a power plant in the Niagara region on the U.S. side," said Jim Munson, a spokesman for Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien."

I just received this from emergencymail.org

I am watching CNN on TV and President Bush said they would have troops there before nightfall to keep order.

There must be looting etc. going on? I didn't get to hear the whole thing on the news.

I have not heard of any looting on the news. I think the troops are an preventive measure.

I would suggest that anyone in surrounding areas get containers and save drinking/cooking water, along with a bucket of water in your bathroom to flush with in case you're water is shut off. If you're near to somewhere that hasn't had power restored yet it's a good probability, so be prepared, although I'd *guess* it would only be for a few hours, or possibly just a restriction on how much you should use.

Five hours plus without hydro!!!! Memories of candlelight.

There are rumors about why the hydro shut down, but that is all they are. No one knows why at this point in time.

They are investigating a lightning strike in NY, but that has been downplayed, as has the story about a fire in the plant in Manhatten. It was even rumoured that it came down from Canada, but the Canadian hydro system stated that our hydro system is fine and working.

The outage, beyond the immediate cause, is due to a built-in safety system, installed to prevent fires when countries share power sources. We pay the price for safety.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Good Morning,
our power went out at 4:15pm est yest.. Thankfully, it came back on at 11:00pm last night. However, most of the surrounding communities are still without power.
Praying for all of you without power or water.

When the lights go on again all over the world*
And the boys are home again all over the world
And rain or snow is all that may fall from the skies above
A kiss won't mean "goodbye" but "Hello to love"

When the lights go on again all over the world
And the ships will sail again all over the world
Then we'll have time for things like wedding rings and free hearts will sing
When the lights go on again all over the world

This is wot we were singing during the Great War in London, and we began singing it again when we realized that the hydro would be off for awhile. Memories, precious memories.

The blame game started early last night. The fact remains, no one really knows yet. Places have been "blamed" from Manhatten to Niagara, Ontario, Chicago and even a midwest state. It was really a mouse that stopped for a union break at an inopportune time. He might just get the sack.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Conspiracy? NBC is reporting that a company that makes "power equipment surge protectors" in Great Britain traded at 4 times its previous record level.

And the London exchange closed hours before the "accident" in the US/Canada.

    Investigations are underway.

The New York Independent System Operator, which runs the state's wholesale electricity market and monitors power usage, said it had detected a sudden loss of power generation at 4:11 p.m.

About 540,000 customers in Ohio were without power, mostly in the Cleveland area.

In New Jersey, where more than 1 million homes and businesses lost power at the peak of the outage, all but 50,000 had been restored by 5:30 a.m. Friday and full service was expected a few hours later. Northern New Jersey commuter railroads and buses announced limited to full service Friday.

In Connecticut, where nearly 310,000 customers served by two power companies lost power, all but about 53,000 had service restored by early Friday.

But in New York, where early estimates had 80 percent of the state without power, the percentage only dropped to some 60 percent near midnight.

Ha! Thanks for bringing it up Dr. Bob, I didn't want to sound insane saying this just didn't seem right.
Mass areas of the country don't lose power like that without anyone having a clue even hours later. A fire in Canada was blamed and they denied it, a fire in PA was blamed and THEY denied it, now they're trying to say it started along Lake Erie out here because of power lines, none of it makes sense.
Don't "they" have credible stories made up to put out to the media in case of situation like this? [IMG] Someone's not doing their job...they need to hire ME. [IMG]
