Genesis 1:1. Without the creation of matter there can be neither time or energy in our known universe. The mere measurements of energy requires matter. And since there cannot be any energy without it being relative to matter, there cannot be any energy to convert to matter.

(Concerning the nature of God’s relation to the world)
“It is sometimes supposed that the question of God’s relation to the universe is a scientific one that can be addressed by cosmology. If scientists were to solve the riddle of whether the physical origins of the universe lay in a Big Bang, or whether the universe exists in a steady state, then it is thought that we should come nearer to explaining the relationship between God and the physical universe.

It is fundamentally important, not only for the topic of this chapter, but for the whole concept of divine providence, to be clear why this is not so.
If God’s relation to the physical universe is capable of being understood scientifically, then God would be part of the physical universe. Investigating God and the universe would be like investigating the relationship of one planet to another, or of one Galaxy to another, or the relationship of anything physical to anything else that is physical. But, according to scripture, God is not part of the physical universe, an individual who can be understood as an immense source of physical power. Rather, God is the creator of the entire physical universe. He is not part of it, but the author of it. In the language of theology, God transcends the universe.”

The known universe is observed and interpreted to be expanding in all directions. Interpreted to be from a "big bang" as being it's beginning. Calculated backwards to have originated some 13.7 billion years ago. Having a beginning [Genesis 1:1].

Now if the universe is collapsing it would be much much older. And it could very well appear to be expanding as we observe it falling into it's center in it's distant past. When Christ returns the universe will only have a thousand years to it's end.
