McCain’s office urged IRS to use audits as weapons to destroy political advocacy groups - UPDATED

A new report from Judicial Watch reveals a concerted effort from Sen. John McCain’s office to urge the IRS under Lois Lerner to strike out against political advocacy groups, including tea party organizations.

Thanks to the results of an extensive Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request that has been delayed for many years, Judicial Watch has obtained several key emails from 2013 that chronicle McCain’s and Democrat Sen. Carl Levin’s efforts to reign in the advocacy groups that sprouted immediately following the Citizens United decision from the Supreme Court.

The documents uncovered by Judicial Watch include notes from a high-level meeting on April 30, 2013 between powerful members of McCain’s and Levin’s staffs and Lerner, then-director of tax exempt organizations at the IRS under Barack Obama. The notes reveal the suggestions from McCain’s former staff director and chief counsel on the Senate Homeland Security Permanent Subcommittee, Henry Kerner who urges Lerner to use IRS audits on the advocacy groups to financially ruin them:

"In the full notes of an April 30 meeting, McCain’s high-ranking staffer Kerner recommends harassing non-profit groups until they are unable to continue operating. Kerner tells Lerner, Steve Miller, then chief of staff to IRS commissioner, Nikole Flax, and other IRS officials, “Maybe the solution is to audit so many that it is financially ruinous.” In response, Lerner responded that “it is her job to oversee it all:”

While I respect John McCain's service to our country in the military, I have never respected his service to our country in Congress.

Being shot down does not make him a hero. I wonder what is in his sealed records.

The guys dead. Do we have to beat it into the ground?

If you want to speculate on anything, what would our country have been like if McCain was elected president instead of Obama? Would JM have taken us down a similar Socialist path as BO did? And did his service record effect his political decisions?

I am not surprised at this news. The man is such a lowlife, a vindictive hateful man to his political foes.

Has been a traitor long before he had a tumor. If his thinking is impaired, why has he not been removed from the Senate?

As long as McCain still dishes his garbage out, why should anyone stop dishing it out back to him? Even with his tumor and being on death's door, he has not laid off his hatred and hostility towards others one bit, he has not humbled himself in the least.

McCain has become an oddity. Those of whom he speaks against are put in an awkward position of wondering just how to respond. If they challenge him in even usual ways the opportunist seize upon that as a way to say, "How in the world can you say this or be strong against him seeing he's a dying man!"

And yet he speaks out in aggressive ways perhaps having influence knowing full well people his opposition have a difficulty mustering a response. Kind of bad form really and not very fair.

As a Christian I don't rejoice at the demise of any individual. My hope is that he is a Christian OR that he becomes one. If his time is short as they say I'd be throwing the politics aside and let the next generation deal with existing issues. I'd say ones family deserves to see you in as much tranquility and peace as possible not all the agitation and striving to do with political issues. Sad.
