It's another one of those instances where the truth has been hidden and the myth spread far and wide. Wirz was a scapegoat who was killed to hide the truth that it was their own people, the Yankees, that were responsible for the death of so many yankee prisoners.

In short, Wirz had contacted Yankee forces in order to have prisoners exchanged. He told them he didn't have the means to feed or shelter so many men and would gladly exchange them for Confederate prisoners. A common practice during the war. But, the Yankees had come to the place where they knew the Confederate prisoners were more valuable to the Confederates then the Yankee prisoners were to the Yankees. The Confederates needed the men. The Yankees didn't.

So the Yankees denied the request.

When the War was over, many of the Yankee prisoners who survived were ready to testify at Wirz's trial that he had done all that he could for them. There just wasn't much he could do. These were not allowed to testify because the Yankees wanted to hang and silence Wirz. They didn't want the Northern people to know what really happened. So they found him guilty and hung him.

Read the book, (Andersonville, The Last Depot, William Marvel, The University Of North Carolina Press, 1994)

As a side note, many of the Yankee survivors would later die on the Steam Boat Sultana that was to take them home. The explosion on that ship remains a mystery, though the Yankees claim it was a boiler.

Why is it that 40 or so schools must be renamed by the godless left, and others seek to honor the defenders of slavery. Yes there were many nice German farm boys on the Bismark, and it is a shame the happenstance of the birth location resulted in them dying for the dark side. But genocide is genocide, and slavery is slavery.

I don't believe so. The Yankees held a trial with Forrest in absence. They came to the conclusion there was no massacre after troops surrendered.

Just because a lot of blacks were killed doesn't mean it was wrong. It was war.

It doesn't matter because it was not a stain.

But...that doesn't matter to me. What matters is what happened.
