"The TSA chose Meg McLain for special screening. They wanted her to go through the new porno-scanners. When she opted out, TSA agents raised an enormous ruckus. When she asked some question about what they planned to do to her, they flipped out. TSA agents yelled at her, handcuffed her to a chair, ripped up her ticket, called in 12 local Miami cops and finally escorted her out of the airport. Amendment IV of the U.S. constitution:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.



It's past time for the government to leave our bodies alone.

Janet Napolitano should be imprisoned...one, for violating the Fourth Amendment of US citizens; two, for not acting against known enemies of the US; and three, for being a man with the name "Janet."

(OK, two out of three ain't bad)

But what this "woman" is doing to our transportation is positively troubling.

We've got a mission trip planned next year. I don't look forward to the hassles.

Beyond that, I wouldn't fly now unless there was simply no other way. I'd drive halfway across the country before I flew. Not worth it.

My daughter was stationed in Afghanistan last year. In May she was able to come home for two weeks leave. When it was time for her to return to her unit, we took her to the local airport and she was completely demeaned by the TSA screeners (note: she was in military uniform). When we filed complaints about the actions of the TSA, they took the political road and swept the matter under the rug. Even when we contacted our Congressman, nothing was done.

There is no doubt that the TSA is completely out of control. I understand airport security and the need for such, but screenings have gotten way out of control. :BangHead:

When people pointed this possibility out when the TSA and Homeland Security was crated under the Bush conservatives shouted them down and deemed unpatriotic.

The gene was let out of the box in the early 2000's. I don't know how it will be bottled up again.

I recall much opposition to the TSA. The primary opposition was in making them Federal employees--which was pushed by Tom Daschle.

Conservatives were the primary opposition to that move.

Sorry to mess up your position with facts.

But it was a conservative, so they say, Republican Congress who did the deed.

Can you give me a source saying the opposition was lead by conservatives. I would like to read it.

Tom Daschle made a comment on forming TSA and making them federal employees:

"You don't professionalize until you federalize."

Read up on the outcry from that.

More evidence of why I say that 911 was the cheapest, quickest, and most effective world war in the history of the world and we lost it. As Sun Su said, the most effective war is the war you don't fight. Something like that. One quick raid and the US has lived in fear for 10 years.

I flew last week and there were no body scanners or ridiculous searches. Just the same old procedures - take your shoes off, bins, etc. Did I miss something? One of the airports was LAX, which I assume would be one of the first to adopt the new procedures.

Unfortunately, the "losers" are the knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers that run our federal government.

Their greatest fear? Offending someone with a good lawyer.

And isn't it an amazing co-incidence that this person just happens to be a media personality?

Fourteen police to escort her out?

I sounds just a little bit like she just may have over reacted to the situation to get that kind of a response.

She outright lied. She said she was the only one picked for the scan when the surveillance video proves that is not correct. She said she was handcuffed to a chair. Lie. She said her ticket was ripped up. Lie. At 2 minutes in the interview she said it hurt to have her breasts twisted...then 5 minutes later said she was not patted down. Lie. She said the TSA agents "flipped out". Lie. She said she could not wipe the tears away after being handuffed. The video shows an agent GIVING her a paper towel to wipe her eyes. Lie.

Her entire testimony was exaggerated beyond belief and full of lies.

Here's my issue: I have no doubt that there are some first-class losers in TSA. I've dealt with some rude, power-hungry, first-class jerks in TSA, who know that they have you over a barrel...and that the first complaint you lodge will put you in more hot water than you could ever imagine.

Having said that, I know that most TSA folks are genuinely trying to do their job. And they do have a stressful one--many folks come in with an antagonistic bent.

I have a strong suspicion that the truth was somewhere in the middle:

  • Probably, the "victim" was a good bit too confontational, and was likely looking for a fight;
  • It's likely the TSA agent that started this whole mess was a power-hungry, self-righteous jerk who should've been fired a long time ago...
    • ...But between the "unfire-ability" of Federal employees;
    • ...the likelihood that she's a member of a "protected class" (or series of said classes--such as a black, left-handed, overweight Rastafarian lesbian with PTSD and a SEIU union card);
    • And the fact that we suspend common sense and individual liberties in these cases..
  • It's quite plausible that in the sensational, ratings-driven culture we're in, there was a plan to bait these admittedly easy, simpleton TSA targets;
  • Admittedly, naked body scans and genital-grabbing techiques are horrible ideas that simply don't deter terrorists (Disagree? Ask Israel how they manage to deter terrorists...and keep their airports safer than ours);
  • We all know that it would be stupid indeed to question a TSA agent--to correct them, ask for a supervisor, or wish to deal with superior regarding offensive/abusive behavior. They hold all the cards. Unless you want to be detained, forbidden from travel, placed on a no-fly list, or lose your ticket--you keep your mouth shut, take whatever they dish out, and remain un-incarcerated.
  • Of course, a messy trial in the court of pubic opinion is the only possible venue. Few, if any, judges are willing to reprimand TSA agents (no matter what their transgresions); and on the flip side, most vicitms didn't exactly behave above-board
In short, it's likely that the victim had an agenda...and it's likely that the TSA good deserved a firing, at least.

Probably, no one will get what they deserved.

Having said that, I do stand by my earlier position that flying has become a dreaded chore.
