Assumes the US military inflicts torture, which they don't....But this doesn't surprise me.

When the United Methodist Church gets the Gospel right, then their "morality" will impress me. For now, the majority of their churches are liberal social clubs that fail to preach the Gospel. Their neglect of the Gospel is sending people to hell by the thousands.

I am a former United Methodist and one whole side of my family is United Methodist. I also have friends who are pastors/ministers within the United Methodist Church. While they are conservative they will tell you up front that they are a real minority. So don't tell me that I don't know what I am talking about. There are conservative, Gospel preaching United Methodist Churches out there. Such Churches are few and far between. The denomination as a whole is in denial of the Gospel and spends much of its time focusing on liberal social issues.

I am opposed to torture, as are most Americans, and I don't believe that our military makes torture a standard practice. However there are countries around the world where torture is standard practice. I wonder why these "Christians" are not protesting those countries?

Martin, I can agree with you on one thing...there are many gospel-teaching UMC churches. I got my first bible (still have it BTW) from a Methodist church. It was the RSV, which I still enjoy. I have heard many hard-hitting sermons in UMC churches. I was saved at a UMC service. Overall, yes they are less conservative than most Baptist congregations, but then, so am I.

I also remember how much I loved my "Good News for Modern Man"NT I got in a UMC Sunday School as a young teenager. I still hold a strong affinity for the people in the UMC.

    I'm sort of betwix.....
On the subject of torture, there's no doubt: It is a moral issue and whether it is occurring or has occurred...... the concept is reprehensible and any time the issue raises its ugly head it every Christian should take a stand and in whatever capacity each is given, oppose it. I'm glad the UMC is taking a stand. Taking such a stand is not what makes UMC a liberal church: but the upsurping of the gospel for social activism and causes is.

A biblical church would preach Christ, and him crucified, and leave torture to the Holy Spirit.

Besides, it hasn't been shown that our military engages in torture as a regular activity.

Abortion, on the other hand, looks like a greater threat, and it is official U.S. policy.

But a liberal church wouldn't touch that one. They'd leave that one to the Holy Spirit. You can't legislate morality, you know, until it's one of their issues.

I hold an affinity for the old United Methodist Church. The United Methodist Church that my grandparents were part of. In fact, they were founding members of what is today a large United Methodist Church. While that particular church has become somewhat liberal, it is still not as bad as many United Methodist Churches. My grandparents, and the old members of that church, were true Bible believing Methodists. Yes, they were Methodists. That means that they were not Baptist! They were Methodist who believed like John Wesley (conditional security, etc). They would be horrified at what many United Methodist Churches are now doing. As for my grandmother, who went to be with the Lord in July of 2000, she remained Methodist until her death. However she never compromised on the Word of God. When I was able to show her, from Scripture, the truth of eternal security she rejoiced in that Biblical truth. She was blind in her last days so should could no longer read. However she always listened to the New Testament on tape that I bought for her and the sermons on tape from my church. She loved the Lord, as I am sure many old time Methodists do. My gripe is not as much with the people who sit in the pews, my gripe is with the denominational leaders and pastors. In my opinion, you should thank the Lord for the blessings He has given you through the various members of the United Methodist Church. I know that I do.

When Baptist churches stand against abortion, pornography access in libraries, homosexuality, and candidates who promote such things we are invading on the mythical separation of church and state. But when the left likes the issue the church stands against we should be so bold.
