Among others, Boomer Esiason, ex-Bengal QB failure turned sports "analyst," said Mrs. Murphy should have had a C-section last week so her husband wouldn't miss the season opener.

First, I know how out of touch the world is with reality, all the while thinking they live in the middle of it and we Christians are the ones not catching the drift. But while Esiason -- who has since apologized for the comment -- was the one making the most ignorant statement regarding Murphy's choice, others were also critical. If nothing else it speaks to what value is placed on highly paid children playing a game, versus what is truly needful in this life.

Murphy and his wife are Christians. He put his priorities where they belong, in my opinion. What say you?

Doesn't even matter if he's a Christian. Murphy did the right thing. Boomer Esiason was wrong. Mike Francesa, who spent 20 minutes ranting against what Murphy did, and on paternity leave in general, on his show, was wrong.

I side with Murphy but I think he was being overly diplomatic about it. He could have said something like, "Witness the birth of my child and comfort my wife? Or miss game 2 of a 162 game season? No brainer, be with my wife."

I believe the MLB collective bargaining agreement says that player may have up to 3 days maternity leave.

    That would be correct.

The criticism that he took those days only shows that mind set of some about family. Sad.

The average baseball career lasts 5.6 years. Being a Dad is a lifelong commitment. Good choice Mr. Murphy!

My second thought is, "He plays for the Mets." Hello!

I was going to say that and also add that his WAR is only 1.5, meaning he's essentially interchangeable with any other second baseman. In other words, the Mets stated the season 0-3 because they are the Mets and not because Murphy didn't play.

The elephant in the board room. His three fielding errors were not offset by his two hits last night. The Mets are still 1-3. Regardless of the team performance, he still made the right choice.
