Darn new Microsoft changes :(
I loaded the complex "security" package
last Wednesday (first day it was
available on-line).

I've got to copy the error message.
Can you believe that Microsoft cannot
even let you copy your error? Why
can't one select it in the normal way,
CONTROL "C" to copy it and take it somewhere
else?

Not only that, the error can't autoresize
and insists on taking up half the screen????

Here is the error:

To help protect your security, Internet Explorer
has restricted this file from shown active
content that could access your computer.

I have an error instead of opitions of what to
do with my pictures.

Unlike the better firewall NORTON, this firewall
of microsoft does not tell me what file is messed
up nor how it is messed up. I want to do stuff
with my pictures :(

Here is the info topic related to this.

--------------------------
What is active content and why does Internet Explorer restrict it?
Active content is content that relies on either ActiveX controls or computer code called a script to work properly. Examples include stock tickers, video, and animated content on Web pages.

These programs can, however, malfunction or give you content you don’t want. In some cases, these programs can be used to collect information from your computer in ways you might not approve of, possibly damage data on your computer, install software on your computer without your consent, or allow someone else to control your computer remotely. Given these risks, you should only install these programs if you completely trust the publisher.

If a Web page you visit tries to display active content, you will see the message below (click the message for more information).

"To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click here for options..."
-----------------------------------

Recall I'm looking at my own pictures, i am not
accessing any foreign site.

The same error happens when going to "My music", "My ebooks"
(i never put an ebook in that file???), "My vidios" (nothing
I put there either).

Wonderful Microsoft.
We lasted for years not using Microsoft explorder browser,
till they bankrupted with other browser providers.

My Grandson put it on
my computer already. But how is that going to
help me unblock the stuff from my own
computer that the microsoft Firewall is blocking?

If you're running XP then restore to a point prior to change. [IMG]

I'm running XP.
I downloaded Microsoft's security upgrade
package and implemented it.
It is not obvious what the security errors
are trying to tell me, how to change it,
in fact, nothing is obivous about microsoft.

How do i "restore to a point prior to change"?

Some of us geeks **Should Have** issued a warning about SP-2!

Sorry we didn't...

There has been a lot of 'Geek News' about this 'upgrade' and it's incompatibility with a *lot* of software...

I do not plan on adding it to my computer...

I am already 'hurting' too much just by down-grading to XP-pro...

I forgive you.
But not for long :(

I should have known better
So how do we back off?
Maybe it is premature to do that?

Another problem.
Since my geek Grandson showed up and put
AOL chat line on my two computers,
neither does the automatic weekly
check specified in my Norton Anti-viral
program. I tryed resetting my scheduled
time. It just never seems to get around
to doing the weekly check.

Start --> Help and Support
In the middle of the window that opens up there is an option "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore". Select it and then you'll be presented with an option "Restore my computer to an earlier time". Select this option and you should be presented with dates from which to choose. Go back to the last known period of peace and happiness... [IMG]

P.S. Avoid AOL/AIM as it is the source of crud. I use Trillian which allows me to communicate using an AIM screen name without the AOL/AIM interface.

I should note that my comment regarding AOL/AIM being the source of crud should read a source of crud. I have two teenagers that have had all kinds of pop-ups and junk and the only thing I can attribute it to (after many counseling sessions and system cleanups) is that it comes from the AIM/AOL. I have both kids on Linux (FC2) now and no more crud. There can be a great deal of work involved with doing this even though Linux zealots would suggest otherwise. This is especially so if there are any special requirements such as MP3 players, gaming, programming/development requirements, e-Sword etc. But if it is simply word processing/spreadsheet and online type usage, then I strongly suggest looking into Linux. G220: //Start --> Help and Support
In the middle of the window that opens up there
is an option "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore".//

Not in my HP Help and Support Center.
I'll try a search on "Undo Changes"

Don't think I want this:
//Performing a system recovery returns your HP Pavilion home PC to
its original software configuration as shipped from the factory.
This HP system recovery process deletes any data or programs that
you installed after purchase. Be sure to back up any data that
you want to keep onto a removable disc//

Seems my HELP option(s) have conflicting advise:
//What is system restore?
System restore resets the PC settings without affecting user programs or document files.

If software on your hard drive accidentally gets erased or damaged,
use the Microsoft system restore feature in Windows XP to restore
the PC operating system and program settings. Use system restore
before using the HP Pavilion system recovery or application recovery program.

How do i tell (except for the results) wheather I'm using
Microsoft system restore or HP System recovery?

Oh well, all i seem to be missing is the side options as to what to so.
I still have the top options.

Is there anyway in SP-2 I can turn off the microsoft firewall?
My Norton Firewall i know how to contol.

The HP system may not have a "Standard" WinXP install...

When I get the money I will buy a new bundled system...

But the *very* first thing I will do is copy off all the drivers and then format the hard drive and load an OEM copy of WinXP pro...

The bundled systems often have "simplified" setups for the technologically challenged...

The only tech support they offer is to wipe out everything you have loaded and start over as if it is new from the box...

That is why, if I weren't a geek, I would prefer to pay the cost of getting a system locally than buying a "Bundled" system from Gateway, HP or Dell...

All of them, are the same... Oh you got a problem?

Wipe it all out and start from scratch...

No thanks! It's bad enough to have Microsoft trying to do my thinking for me...

Ed, you are very wise to see the identity of the evil one. He is an insidious evil that is permeating the very fabric of society with his intentionally poor software.

Any chance you get to toss a piece of Microsloth software out the door do so. Especially look out express and IE

The operating system too if you are up to a little challenge.

Got it.

I found a workaround for the
first post problem. No other problems.
I may just stay the course with the
new software, buggie parts and all.

My wife has like a80286 chip based computer.
It won't break and the financial program
has long since lost all forward compability.
So we don't interface that with the rest
of the world and keep our $ stuff away
from the public.

Thank you for the help G220.
