Have a computer in the garage that is going to get a work out this spring with linux to see what I can do for my future. Unless apple drops their prices I doubt I'll be going with them. Maybe in a few years I could pick up an older one that will do windows programs. Have way too much software to not be able to use them.

I just did an ebay and xp is still selling in the high 80s so there is still a demand.

I have enough license/copies for personal use into the future which I'm thankful for.

Give this a try on that computer in the garage. I think you will like it. I run it on one of my systems now and am working on getting Windows off my laptop also.

Is it perfect? No.. I would go with a Mac also, but the prices are what gets me. I wonder if they would lower their prices some wouldn't they have a bigger market share from users that are tried of M$?

I have ubantu and kubantu, suise and couple others. Ubantu looked very nice. and kubantu is a variation of it that was supposed to run windows programs only it didn't have "wine" on it to do so. (Ebay rip off :) The guy gave me the code to download and install line but it isn't hooked to the network so haven't tried that yet.

I do not like going back to a dos window to run my computer and that is about what linux is like on some of the systems.

Magnetic Pole has a good point to the coming problems so bailing out if I can will come soon as I can. Wife loves Vista as does my son, but they have new computers that were built for it.

If linux guys would do a graphical interface instead of the dos window and an add/remove program they would go to town me thinks as would apple with the suggested lower priced line.

excentric, ubuntu and kubuntu will let you use the graphical Synaptic program to add other software, but you have to be on the Internet. As for wine, some programs work with it, some don't. You should not have to buy Linux, it is freely downloaded from the web also.

Another easy version to try is PCLinuxOS. The MiniMe version is a quick download if you want to try it.

I bought the one on ebay due to its glowing report of running windows programs - silly me

Will give the snoop to the one you listed. I got a network hub so I can hook it up to the net without dragging the mess into my way too small office area. If I get one working I will change my old laptop I use here in the house to it and see how it goes.

I bought the eee pc because of the linux but finally went with xp as I wasn't having too much luck with things (Terminal window etc. :) I've seen synaptic mentioned on the eee pc boards but thought they were talking about the touch pad :-( dumby me :)

Every keeps talking about Mac prices being high, but when I bought my Mac I did not really see a significant difference between them and Winboxs. Plus I so far the quality of the hardware itself over a PC justifies the price. With all troubles you can end up paying for with a PC way not go with a Mac. In the long run it could save you. As we say here: "lo que sale brato, sale caro". That which sells cheap ends up being expensive.

M$ has to do whatever it can to keep up the profits. Now that Vista SP1 has been released to manufacturing, more people will be willing to go to it.

I run XP on both of our computers right now. A friend gave me a valid serial for Vista Home Premium, but I haven't installed it yet. I will put it on a new partition on my rig to kick the tires. I wasn't buy Vista for my rig, but I will try it since it is free. ;)

M$ painted itself into a corner with XP/Vista. They took so long to get Vista out that people became comfortable with XP, and XP became a good OS. I am looking forward to Windows 7, myself. By the time the put it out I should be building a new uber machine.

Ya'll can keep the Macs. Windows is restrictive, but I can do what I want to it itself, as well as my hardware. I like to tinker with my stuff, not stay static, and I am a definite gamer. I like to say I am a performance computer enthusist, even though I can't afford to be a full-fledged one. I just can't see me trying to build a gaming rig with an Apple...
