    dropping the price of Vista :thumbs: would seem it might not be selling as well as they thought.:tonofbricks:

    I have Vista on my office Gateway. When I ordered a new Dell for my wife to use I requested XP. There's nothing grand about Vista. I have four gigs of ram and a super fast processor on my office lap top. It ought to speed right along. But, with Vista it takes forever to start up, to shut down, and from time to time it will just stop and reboot for no reason. I'm thinking about buying XP and getting rid of Vista. Maybe the next operating system will be better. I hope so for Micro Soft's sake. Otherwise it's time for Mozilla to introduce a superior operating system. Fire Fox sure does a lot better job than Explorer.

    I upgraded to Vista on my 3gig unit and I've never seen the poor thing struggle so. After over a month of daily troulbes/problems and continuing problems I reformatted and went back t xp. Could not believe how fast things were :laugh:

    I've been thinking about a laptop and was looking at one of the cheaper ones and my xp 6 year old laptop is faster than the new ones.

    I dunno, guys, but I've had this Gateway M-series laptop for over a month now, it's got Vista, and my only issue with it has been the built-in synaptics pointing device that clicks links open if I happen to forget and put the arrow on top of a link.
    I think there are programs in the background that are running, because I noticed these uncalled events happening only when the status indicator runs.
    It's a bother.
    I had to reinstall the system twice, and the issue persists.
    But other than that I have no problems with the startup or shutdown.
    The internet explorer, though, is another thing.
    Does Opera and Mozilla work well in Vista ?
    Oh, yes, that's one more thing I don't like.
    I use python for programs and this one I have which they say is compatible with Vista doesn't have the same user friendly IDE that I had with XP.
    Ditto with the Borland C++ compiler/interpreter that I downloaded.
    You need to install some other files separately with Vista i went to the Bloodshed instead.
    Has anything really, really Vista compatible come up along these lines ?

    Vista is garbage. I prefer XP. Vista is all flash with no substance.

    Firefox runs very nicely in Vista. When my upgrade was finished Explorer wouldn't even run, fought that for couple weeks.

    Vista seems to run fine on machines that are sold with it. Wife has laptop and son has one of each and they don't have any problems after the first few days.

    The problem is older hardware and software. A number of software companies are taking this opportunity to not update their software and force people to buy new versions.

    I have a ton of data files and it took close to three times longer to copy from drive to drive under Vista. I think all the security settings have to be changed for every file that is moved.

    It deleted all of my mp3 files during the upgrade. I had them in a directory on my drive and it deleted every file but left the directory structure. Have no idea what they did it for.

    You are familiar with Linux right?
    Mozilla is an open source software developer and and there are many open source Linux distros out there that run great!

    I am typing this on a a system preconfigured with linux and it boots up in 22 seconds.
    What is also great is that it is so lean that it is able to run on a 900Mhz celeron and runs way faster than a 2.0 Dell P4 that I installed Vista on.

    My main computer is a Mac but I would recomend this little laptop to anyone who wanted a second computer for basic tasks.
    Of course if you just want to try linux, it is free for most version of it.

    My thoughts exactly. It looks like they tried to be a Mac by putting on a pretty face.
    The thing is that the Mac is a solid, usable and stable system that happens to have a nice looking interface.
    Vista is flashy and almost nice looking but a pain to use.

    That all said, I never used Vista long enough to get really familiar with it.
    I tried but I never actually NEEDED to use it.
    And the more I did use it the more I disliked it.

    All advatages I saw over previous Windows version were just things that make it more Mac-Like and yet they all fell short.

    Maybe some of you who have used it more will get used to it and like it but OS X leopard is by far the best OS out today.

    Even with xp on the EEEPC I think it is faster booting. I have a 1.6 older laptop and I'm fairly sure the EEE is faster to boot.

    My wife has gotten used to Vista and likes it but it is now operating like a system should - you don't think about it being there. She finally has it working the way she wants, or has adapted to using it the way they are forcing her to using it :laugh: -- actually a little bit of both I think, but she likes it. Her laptop came with it and that seems to be the key.

    I just haven't seen much point in putting XP on this EEE PC. I have thought about putting TIger on it but it just works so well as it.

    It seems that anyone knowing linux loves it as is or with other distros and all us that haven't figured linux out yet like xp :laugh: and the long discussions on which, why and what sneek into many threads on other subjects :thumbs:

    I wish that I had gotten it to work in the advanced mode before making the shift. May take a weekend and redo things and give it a try.

    I just made the switch to full desktop mode, which is by default a lot like windows.
    I have been able to set it up the way I want.
    I have installed GnomeSword and Audacity.
    It tends to be a lot more usable than windows and a lot less cluttered.
    It is also very cusomizeable.

    I still like the Mac the best and thought about installing OS X on it after I found instructions to do it but for now will just stick with Xandros.

    It is so lean and stable.
    I hate to say it but it may even be more stable than my mac.
    But that is probably only because I work my Mac to death. 15-20 apps open all the time. Often Windows 2000 is running is a virtual machine.

    Oh, I also upgraded my Eee PC to 1 GB of ram. I think it helps a little bit.

    I went with 2 gig right away with windows, figured it would save wear and tear.

    I found a pen drive linux that runs within windows, will be messing around with that as I have time to see if I can start learning it.

    There are about six other minis hitting the market soon most higher priced, some with xp others with linux. One looks way too neat, more of a tablet unit.

    Sears and wal mart both have desktop units with Linux now so things are changing.

    Ever try DSL (D*** Small Linux)? It should be able to be used as a flash drive bootable OS if I remember corrently. It is small enough that it should run like magic on the Eee.

    I've heard of it but haven't tried it. Have several bigger ones I'm toying with when I have time on an older unit in the garage.

    This pen one works within/on top of what ever windows so you don't have to reboot every time and I can mess with it now and then and not have to mess up my main computer.

    Want to dig into your suggestion one day if I can get by the name :laugh:

    I got rid of the sony vaio and got me an iddy biddy hp and VISTA is much more user friendly on it. BUT it still quits for no reason and I'm still dissappointed that some of my old teacher programs won't run on it at all. I've also downloaded a few programs that are totally useless on VISTA.

    I'd even bought a few programs that were useless on VISTA ultimate (which I'd upgraded to on the sony) that said they were compatible. The sony is now Ron's computer ;)

    Don't feel too sorry for him. He doesn't need it very often.
