I am trying to file some illustrations in Word. How can I alphabatize them? How can I search for a specific word?

Alphabetize using a spread sheet (Excel) . . .

Search for a word

control 'f'

Enter in your search phrase (can globally replace - you might want to practice that one first).

Don't need Excel

Highlight the list of words

Table>>Convert>>Text to Table

Table>>Sort>>>Click "OK"

If desired, then you can do: Table>>Convert>>Table to Text
to get back to non-tabled text.

I have just stuck all loose illustrations in a big document. I use all caps to type in words at the beginning to search for that relate to the illustration, then when I need one I just use the find feature looking for case sensitive.

Just tried an even simpler way, and it works!

Highlight your list

Table>>Sort>>OK

Works great. No need to make a table.

Thanks. I tried it, and I have one out of order. I have done it several times and each time it leaves this one out of order. Any suggestions on how to fix it other than just manually move it?

Pastor, is it somehow containing a hidden character or leading space? Perhaps it is not its own paragraph, or not following a line return. Those would throw off the sort.
Also, check the dialog box before hitting OK for options.

Same things I would tell ya' to look for . . . unfortunately, this ain't real software, or we could google the escape characters and write one awsome grep program (ok it is just a line of code - but it is cooooool).

Yes, please; can you give us the particular one that's not sorting properly, and where it ends up in the sorted list?

To piggy-back on a previous suggestion about bolding/capitalizing, Word allows you to assign a "heading" to a particular line. After you've set up all your desired lines as headings, go to Help, and look up "table of contents," and follow the instructions for setting up a table of contents at the beginning of your document. Once you've set that up, you only have to scroll through the table of contents, and click on the one you want, and it will take you directly there.
