According to the Wiki article:
Bloomberg served as the 108th mayor of New York City, holding office for three consecutive terms beginning his first in 2002. A lifelong Democrat before seeking elective office, Bloomberg switched his party registration in 2001 to run for mayor as a Republican. He won a second term in 2005 and left the Republican Party two years later. Bloomberg campaigned to change the city's term limits law and was elected to his third term in 2009 as an independent on the Republican ballot line.
Bloomberg officially launched his campaign for the Democratic Party's nomination in the 2020 presidential election on November 24, 2019, following weeks of speculation that he would join the race as a late entry.

The whole article is an amazing view of Bloomberg's beliefs and politics.
Like Sanders, he appears to me to be more of a political opportunist. Picking the party that gives him the best chance to win rather than on principle.
As I posted earlier, Sanders was a long time independent until his run in 2016 when he declared as a Democrat. After his loss (possibly from having the party steal the nomination for Hillary), he drop out of the party and became an independent once more until this election cycle where Sanders once more declared himself a Democrat.
