Historic Fundamentalism is the literal exposition of all the affirmations and attitudes of the Bible and the militant exposure of all non-Biblical affirmations and attitudes. "THE HISTORY OF FUNDAMENTALISM IN AMERICA by Dr. George W. Dollar
I wonder how many on this board would agree with Dr. Dollar

My impression is that fundamentalism is moving away from the "militancy" expression. The idea is right -- we are in a battle for truth and we must not shy away from the conflict. But the term has caused confusion and harm in that many have taken it as a call to be nasty, mean, and unprincipled in the fight. It has caused some to use the same terminology/techniques against new or untaught Christians as they do with hardened apostate clergy. I probably would not use the term anymore.

That's why some of us so militantly oppose easy believism, KJVOnlyism, and hateful legalistic demands for submission to extra-biblical rules.

Is that his real name? Dollar? I guess the buck stops here.

Fundamentalism implies retaining biblical fundamentals. Many use the word, but are quite non-fundamentalist, or hyper-fundamentalist. The KJVO crowd is a good example. They claim to be fundie, but are not.

WOW! I just left one forum because they were bashing King James Only and here we go Again!

Bring up the word MILITANT and everyone automatically starts bashing the King James only crowd and those who have personal standards!

I guess this crowd must be the True Militant Fundamentalists. It's a small crowd, but I'm sure glad to be part of it!

I've never read it, but I know this: the purpose of the Holy Spirit in my life is to transform me into the image of Christ, not the image of anyone else.

Dr. Dollar was a prof at my seminary. I enjoyed him as a [cantankerous] individual!!

His book is a classic history of the movement. Most of whom we would call "neo's" or at best "evangelicals" among Baptists would be in the MODERATE sort of category.

MILITANT are willing to stand AND contend for the faith once delivered to the saints. Just to "Believe" the fundamentals of 1895 does not a REAL fundamentalist make!

BTW, KJVO does not fit the definition of ANY sort of fundamentalist. Sad.

Like Dr. Bob, I knew George Dollar (briefly). He could be a bit of a hot-head at times (God bless him) but I think only because he was so passionate about his beliefs & doctrinal truth.

The copy of the book of his mentioned that I have features a picture of a clenched fist resting on a Bible on its cover! He wrote a follow-up to this book about 10 years later. I don't recall the title of it, but I believe copies are still available here & there.

KJVO's by definition cannot be fundamentalist, because they add to the Bible. It should be noted, however, that there are many who are KJVP (which is perfectly biblically appropriate) that should not be confused with KJVO.

It also doesn't mean that non-fundies aren't Christian. That's not the case at all. One need not be a fundamentalist to be a Christian.

While not fundie, KJVO's are indeed often militant. What makes KJVO's militant is that the crowd wishes to inflict its belief about the KJV over all of Christianity to the point where they assert that a non-KJVO stance is evil (which it is not).

Add another "AMEN". I have no problem with the KJVpreferred; I was one most of my life. [IMG]

But (this may come as a shock) I have a righteous anger toward the only sect!

Excellently put. I agree. However some are like concrete: all mixed up and permanently set.

This view of affairs is what causes many of us to shake our heads when folks start fulminating about the "Fundamentalists" in the SBC or when somebody tries to tar men like Dr. Bob and myself to the brush they use for the conservative wing of the SBC.

</font>[/QUOTE]I tend to agree with you. I, for many years, was a militant IFB, KJV (not only though) type person. I preached it, lived it, and won many people to the Lord...and not in the 1,2,3, pray after me type way, either. But, I noticed that on many subjects that were being brought to my attention, I had to go back and look at them one by one and ask myself why I "believed" those subjects. On many, I had some superficial answers and could use SOME scripture to meet my own purpose. But, I realized that I had hurt a lot of people, and I truly didn't have a CONVICTION FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT on the subjects...it was more a conviction from my pastor. I praise the Lord that He opened my eyes and put me on the right path....We are responsible to study and find out WHY we believe what we believe, and not to let some man standing behind a pulpit TELL us what we are supposed to believe. If it is SCRIPTURALLY correct, then we are responsible to follow the scriptures...But, some of these extra biblical things are just nonsense for preachers to be making a big fuss over. They won't count for much in eternity.

Can you be militant defensively but not militant offensively? After all, the apostles were willing to defend their faith to the death.
