Just days after President Bush publicly affirmed Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's job security through the end of his term, a family of publications catering to the military will publish an editorial calling for the defense secretary's removal.

The editorial, released to NBC News on Friday ahead of its Monday publication date, stated, "It is one thing for the majority of Americans to think Rumsfeld has failed. But when the nation's current military leaders start to break publicly with their defense secretary, then it is clear that he is losing control of the institution he ostensibly leads."

Rumsfeld and his associates have lost the confidence and the respect of our troops. It's time to get someone on board who can lead effectively.

Also Friday, several conservatives who pushed for the invasion of Iraq said they would not have supported a war if they knew how poorly the Bush administration would handle it, according to Vanity Fair magazine.
"I think now I probably would have said, 'No, let's consider other strategies for dealing with the thing that concerns us most, which is Saddam (Hussein) supplying weapons of mass destruction to terrorists,"' said Richard Perle, who sat on the Pentagon's Defense Policy Advisory Committee until 2004.

Kenneth Adelman, who served on the Defense Policy Board with Perle, said Bush, Defense Rumsfeld and others in the administration "turned out to be among the most incompetent teams in the postwar era. Not only did each of them, individually, have enormous flaws, but together they were deadly, dysfunctional."

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Four US military newspapers catering to all the branches of the US armed forces will reportedly publish an editorial on the eve of the November 7 congressional election, demanding the resignation of US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

An advance copy of the article titled "Time for Rumsfeld to Go" was obtained by the television network and posed on its website late Friday. It is scheduled for simultaneous publication Monday by the Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times and Marine Corps Times, NBC News said.
"Rumsfeld has lost credibility with the uniformed leadership, with the troops, with Congress and with the public at large," the advance copy said.
"His strategy has failed, and his ability to lead is compromised," the editorial continued. "And although the blame for our failures in Iraq rests with the secretary, it will be the troops who bear its brunt."

Fortunately for all of us, the military does not get to pick their civilian leaders.

If they did, we'd never see another democrat as President.

That may have been true once, but I think Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld has changed that opinion.

==If the military was allowed to do its thing in Iraq, with no political considerations, I imagine the whole Iraq war could be ended in days. I don't see that as a bad thing.

That's not going to happen no matter which party is in power. too much collateral damage to suit any politician.

Liberals just haven't had enough time yet to make the entire country lose it's political will and give away another one. But they're still trying and may yet succeed.

Who the SecDef is doesn't matter. Their agenda will remain the same.

Agreed. But our military was led into the war with the goal of "winning hearts and minds of the Iraqi people" and "nation building" to turn Iraq into a Bush delusion of democracy - even though an initial Bush campaign promise was there would be no nation building. And pleeeeeese don't anyone bring 09/11. Iraq did not attack us.

==And that is one of the reasons why I am no longer a support of the Bush administration (along with the fact that I have come to distrust all politicians). It is not our job to build a democracy in Iraq (whether it would work or not) or in any other country. If they want a democracy let them do it themselves. I am tired of American soldiers being injured and dying so those people can have something that (a) it does not seem the majority of them really want (b) most of them are not willing to fight for. However even if "A" and "B" were not true nation building would still be wrong. Nation building is a very bad idea and I never, may I repeat never, support it. Our military should be defending us not building a strawman government in Iraq. The military should destroy our enemies and protect our shores, not build other people's nations. Period.

Army Times Publishing Company is a Gannett subsidiary.

Check out the link for Gannett http://www.gannett.com/

They are a military paper in name only!

As Paul Harvey would say "The Rest of the Story"

The Army/Air Force/Navy/ Times are avidly read by our troops. They are found on base, in libraries and day rooms.

And they always reflected the thinking of the average troop.

Once in the AF, I was planning for the annual flu immunization program, when I read a rather surprising notice about the strains being used that year, in the AF times.

I called SAC to ask the Flight Surgeon's office there, and to my surprise, the General in charge of the medical service for SAC got on the phone. I asked the question, and he replied that he thought we would do things the usual way, but that he had just read an article in the AF Times...

What effect did de-Ba'athification have on the Iraqi army? Does the lack of a central Iraqi bank affect how the soldiers can get their pay to their families? Can trainers train effectively if they don't speak the same language as their trainees?

How long do you think American soldiers would fight without pay, particularly those with dependent families?
